Barclaycard does not want expats as customers without a UK address

Just got a letter from Barclaycard informing me that unless I send them an official document proving that I am resident in the UK they are closing my credit card account in August.

This is after I have been with them for over 20 years. Goodbye credit history?https://britishexpats.com/forum/images/icons/icon8.gif

Anyone else?

No, but it does not surprise me at all, they are all running scared and only want absolutely safe "customers". Shocking after 20 years!

I had an Alliance Trust SIPP. They introduced a 500pound a year special charge for non UK residents to cover the extra postage costs. I suspect if we get the hard Brexit these letters will be a bit more common.

Apparently nothing to do with 'unsafe customers' and nothing to do with Brexit, but with the unstable financial situation with banks collapsing....

If Meghan brought it in the all together I still wouldn't be inclined to pay 500 quid.

I’m afraid the banks (that supply credit cards) are never going to say it is because you are unsafe, but in practice this has been going on for quite some years now whereby they are dumping “customers”. A quick look around and you will find the money laundering and anti-terrorism laws are the cause and it is easier for the banks to simply get rid of those small numbers that could be a little more “unsafe”. Why, well the suggested reason is they are scared of the fines that may be imposed if they are not seen as squeaky clean.Suggested as an alternative is pre-paid cards, but of course you need a bank account to pay into these. Not looked at any to see if they also insist on a UK address. One other possibility would be someone like Transferwise, again not looked at in detail, but they do seem to allow regular payments into your account and have a Mastercard (debit). Currencyfair allow payments in to their accounts from Italy, but don’t seem to have a card and/or regular payments in features.
