Just because some people decided to take up residency, shouldn`t mean that others that dont want to (not just for tax reasons), should not try to get an easier way to spend more than 90 days at a time, then all this visa rubbish, especially if they have a property to go to, and have health insurance.
You can drive a car for 180 days on your UK licence without being a resident.
None of this makes any real sense to me. (as normal with anything to do with the EU)
Of course some residents may decide, later in life to return to the UK, where they will expect to avail themselves of all that the UK will offer them at that time.

Wanting the cake and eat it springs to mind... Am I right assuming you voted "leave"?

Reading the comments above from Wellinever I think you are confusing a few things that are not connected.

It's worth pointing out that this conversation is taking place in the Italy subsection of this forum, and that in Italy there has been a longstanding requirement to register your residency with the local municipality if you live somewhere for more than 90 days. This is Italian law, not EU law. It applies to everyone, including Italians. The people who are residents didn't just decide to take up residency - they had no choice, they had to do it by law.

It's not connected to Brexit, and not connected to tax status. It's not connected to returning to the UK at a later stage, which is their legal right.

This is separate from the conversation about those people who wish to come to Italy for a vacation and wish to stay for more than 90 days in a 180 day period. Staying in the EU (or the Schengen area) for more than 90 days is not permitted without a visa for people from those countries that are not part of the free movement agreements. The UK chose to leave, hence UK citizens need a visa. Many countries require a visa. Australia and the USA for example. Oh, and the UK of course. So it's not really fair to criticise the EU for requesting a visa.

Now, it's true that in most cases (but not all) that EU citizens an visit the UK for up to 6 months and perhaps the EU might want to reciprocate and offer UK citizens the same...the UK can make it's own rules now...but it doesn't necessarily mean the EU must do the same.
