Rebuilding Christchurch - Opportunities in New Zealand for Skilled workers
The wake of 2011’s devastating earthquake has left much of Christchurch in serious need of repair, but it’s no mean feat; thousands of skilled workers are now needed to help complete the task. And with many jobs in crisis here in the UK, this could be the perfect time to reconsider relocating to New Zealand…
At the end of 2012, the blueprint for the city’s recovery was unveiled, identifying 15 anchor projects central to the rebuild of the main city, but
getting Christchurch to where it needs to be simply cannot be done with the workforce it currently has. Which is where you might come in.
Over the next 10 years, the country is estimated to spend £15bn on the regeneration of Christchurch: 30,000 skilled tradespeople are required and 20,000 new homes need to be built in conjunction with businesses and infrastructure systems. But NZ simply can’t garner this kind of workforce alone and so it’s opening up the opportunity for international work.
With a big demand in overseas labour in the infrastructure, construction and engineering sectors - as well as the need for those with associated skill sets like painting and decorating, plastering, scaffolding, carpentry and electrics, plus jobs going in transport and logistics - there are literally thousands of permanent, full-time contracts available to those who want them currently.
So, what do you need to know about working in New Zealand? Well, for a start the salaries are pretty darn good. The average construction worker can expect to receive up to NZ$60,000 per year, which is roughly around NZ$800 a week (about £400). For this, you would be expected to work a 40 hour week, and would be entitled to 4 weeks paid holiday per year.
