What is the difference between web design and web development?

Hello,

I am thinking of going into either web development or web design. I know the small differences, but what I really want to know which one makes for better for my career? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

As per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Designer a designer is more focussed on presentation, i.e. content, usability, appearance and structure. As per http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_developer a Web Developer is more oriented towards the mechanics of making that experience possible, e.g. databases access, security, PHP vs Java/JSP, dynamic HTML with Ajax etc.

In my last 10 years or so of on-line development I have tended to concentrate on the 'back end' side of things. I can put a functional site together but I leave the pretty stuff to people with more artistic flair than myself.

I find that if you have a good understanding of the mechanics of a site then this makes you more useful in the eyes of an employer who may well require a 'jack of all trades' kind of person.

I come from the c/c++ background dating back 20 years and have found a wide range of skills is usually preferable to being a 'guru' in a couple, especially in a fluid job market.

The fact I like to work for smaller companies probably reinforces all this, for me anyway.

Now, excuse me, I need to get back to SEEK :)

Design : deisgn the look of site such as images and colours.

Developer : Makes the website run and work how they should perform.
