C#/ASP.NET jobs in Sydney?

i am a C#/ASP.NET web developer with 18 months experience. I also have experience with ADO.NET, HTML and Javascript. however my company works with the Borland Firebird database so at present I have not worked with the MSSQL Server.

Firstly does anybody know what the Sydney C#/ASP.NET job market is like?

Also, my company is offering to pay for me to do the MCAD exams. this will be a lot of hard work considering ive only got about 3 months to pass all three exams. will it make much difference to my job hunting success if I get this qualification? and do I need to learn MSSQL server in a hurry?

any advice much appreciated as I am slightly nervous that I will not be able to get a job!

thanks.

Hey Wee Bubba!

Although i understand what you are saying being a computer programmer myself, your question is a bit specialised for a Lifestyle forum  , i would suggest you contact some employment agencies in the Sydney area who will be able to give you a better idea on what employers are looking for. If you have good knowledge of c# and web development i cant see you looking too long for a job in Sydney, but i maybe wrong.

try:
www.seek.com.au
www.careerone.com.au

Cheers

Hi.

I feel that the database side of things will let you down but if you are willing to work for little money (well below market rates) then you may get on the band wagon and get experiance with SQL Server.

Regarding MCAD exam, don't do it, these exams will be deleted in a few years down the line. These have been replaced (for .NET 2.0) with brand new exams. I am currently doing mine, which I have split into several areas:

1. Get my selft certified as a Microsoft Certified Technologies Specialist (MCTS) which requires two exams (core + web client) once I have got this I will then go for my final exam in Web Application which will make me a MCPD.

Take a look at places like www.seek.com.au. The market seems fairly good and you should find plenty of vacancies, especially if you are looking at any kind of permanent visa.

With regards to the Microsoft Exams I am a little undecided. If you do them properly (i.e. actually learn the material) then you'll have learnt things that you wouldn't normally touch on in day to day work. Knowing the breadth of the subject including terminology will give you an advantage at interviews. It also shows that you are keen on personal development or have an interest, which a lot of companies appreciate.

On the flip side, I know that lots of these exams can be done by getting hold of old test papers and memorising the questions. I know someone who passed their SQL Server exam by just using the test papers alone. The ironic part was that they were not even technical in the slightest.

I wouldn't be too worried about the lack of MSSQL. I'm assuming you have some experience using ANSI-SQL, in which case that should be enough to cope with the typical MSSQL tasks.
