Brisbane IT Job Market
Hi Guys,
I've about 10 years of experience in Network / Server installation, maintenance and management. along with the following qualifications MCSE 2003: Security CISSP CCSP CCNA CWSP Any idea on if i'll be able to get a reasonable job. I'm a bit worried about the comments relating to it being difficult to get a foot in the door? I've done the ASC RPL thing and been given CISSP specialist (2231-79 i think from memory) and am well into the visa process. any info would be appreciated. cheers Steve |

Bloke,
Their are 3 gigs in Brisbane for Security Specialists. 1. Government http://jobs.qld.gov.au 2. Suncorp www.suncorp.com.au 3. Service provider to government/Suncorp. (Some SME but not worth it.) For CISSP / CCSP (Policy/Technical) depending on your preference, try www.bridgepoint.com.au. They're a smallish outfit but pretty good & niche in security. Don't expect anything fabulous in the way of work though if you're with service providers. Top salary is about 80K (Unless you're CCIE VOICE) Most other corporates like Bank of QLD (Outsource to EDS) or there's rubbish jobs installing 1600 series in SME offices. You'll die of boredom if not financially ruined first. Data3 also worth a look. Don't know the URL but google does. Anyone else (apart from above) = complete waste of time. Truly. |

Fridge, Voice seems to be a trump card if the jobsites are anything to go by. I am applying as network security MODL. Is it fair to say security is less required than voice or can you advise if thats just more specific to Brissy ? Cheers SB |
Re: Brisbane IT Job Market
Security's pretty big in the government space but there's not as many large corporates in Brisbane (except Suncorp) who have dedicated security ops & op risk (policy) departments. Except for goverenment.
Sydney & Melbourne probably better on the corporate & finance side as there's more banks & insurers with office down there. Bris seems to have a lot of service provider work & the moneys in VOIP for many. You can get quite lucrative contracts for security (to government) in brisbane, but you'll be going via a 3rd party solutions provider who's on their approved "panel" is the word they use. For MODL work, again Canberra seems to have most of it as it's federal govt, not state. Haven't worked down south for quite a while so best check on local jobserve.com.au & seek.com.au to get a rough idea of demand.Traditionally, it's been Sydney Melbourne Canberra Brisbane in that order, in terms of numbers of jobs but I hear it's slowing down in Sydney a bit. Some article about it on brainbox.com.au I think. |
