Yes, it may well be easier but the cost of a return flight, possibly also cost of accommodation, is something to be thought about.

Yes I can see your point.

However, you can renew your British Passport nine months in advance with the remaining validity (in whole months) added onto your new passport. For example, someone renewing a British Passport with an expiry date of 10 December 2015 using the premium service in the UK today will get a passport with the validity between 9 September 2015 and 10 December 2025.

One may be able to time a trip to the Passport Office with a family visit in order to save cost.
