Moving to Mumbai
 

Hi..

I have received a job offer to move to Mumbai and before accepting had a few queries on the life in India.

- where would be the best areas to live in Mumbai
- aside from rent accomodation (tv/internet/phone bills etc)/ income tax/ leisure spends, are there any other obligatory hidden costs that we should be aware of?

appreciate any comments/ tips that would help in making our decision

Hello Anju and welcome to BE.

Depending on where you will be working, there are many "good" areas to live in. If you have a choice, best to stay closer to your workplace to avoid commuting. Traffic can get very bad in Mumbai. If you are working in South Mumbai, staying and commuting from North or West would take up a lot of time.

As for costs, unless your employer is arranging the accommodation, you should definitely look at the brokerage you pay for the rental house. Be sure to fix this first upfront. For rentals its usually 1 months rent as brokerage. Ensure that its NOT payable each year on renewals. Just a one time payment.

If you have school going children, get admissions organised right away. Its tough getting into schools that you want. Same with College/University.

Rest should not be a bother as every area has its own facilities like Cinema, Malls, restaurants, hotels.

You will enjoy your stay in Mumbai thats for sure. If you need any other info just buzz. And best wishes on your relocation.:thumbsup:

hi- thanks for your response. the likelihood is that the offfice will be in Lower Parel.. What is this like as an area for expats to live in.

Not too bad, its a Commercial cum residential area. But you would prefer to live in adjacent Worli area which would be very nice.

Bandra another good area and fairly "do able" for you. No doubt you will have car and driver

Traffic is a huge problem - really worth getting a visit in to look at the areas as what it looks like on the net is not what it seems in reality. IF you are used to a long commute this may not be a problem for those who are not the distance between work and home is very important especially in the up coming monsoon!!

Accom is very expensive and you really need to make sure you get a good package to cover these costs.

Everything can seem to take an age to sort out so come prepared for things to work slowly.

But there are the pleasant surprises you can have just about anything delivered to your doorstep at the drop of a hat and for cheap!! Food good and lots to do in the city. Most expats end their tour having loved it but many do find it a hard place to live
