Default Advice please on tourist visa

My son plans to travel to India in September and stay a few months. He applied for a visitor's visa which was issued yesterday. He was hoping to stay in India until at least the end of January. The dates on the visa are: issued - June 27, 2014 expies - December 27, 2014. Multiple entires.

Does anyone know if these dates mean that he can enter India any time up to December 27 and can stay beyond this date, or that he must leave India by December 27?

Thanks.

surely there are two things here, one when he is allowed to arrive as per the visa dates and then when he is supposed to leave which would be defined by the stamp placed in the passport upon arrival?

Agree with Britishbull. What often happens is that a visa will have a validity date by which entry must be made. On arrival there will be a number of days stamped in the passport by which the visitor must leave by.

Perhaps someone else can provide more details?

the 6 month tourist visa is valid for 6 months from the date it is issued so it starts immediately. It is not like most other visa's for other countries that start from date of entry.

Nothing like a bit of visa confusion to guarantee you an overstay!
