Does an apprenticeship count as work experience when it comes to Temporary work visas? I understand that the rules are changing in March requiring 2 years work experience for a temporary work visa.

I don't think so - and plumbing is a licensed trade so you may need a skills assessment even for a temporary visa

If you want someone to do all the work for you, try a MARA agent. I think you do because it is a licensed trade, but check Vetassess or the immi website to confirm

Yes, it is a mix of experience and qualification. Qualification wise you would need a minimum of NVQ3 - the NVQ2 that many do is not sufficient and you would need what ever the assessing authority require which is usually 2-3 years POST qualifying experience.

Vetassess is the skills assessing authority in the UK for plumbers.

Although a Level 3 qualification is desirable, it is possible to apply for a skills assessment based on work experience alone - Vetassess are currently asking for 4 years full time work experience - including some work experience in the last three years.

Bear in mind though, that if all you have is four years' experience, then you won't get any points for employment, as immi will minus your first 3 years to count as a 'training period'. You also won't get a formal qualification as part of doing the skills assessment. Instead you will be given an offshore technical skills record (OTSR), which can be used to apply for a provisional licence when you arrive in Australia.

Saying that, we've had experience of applicants using their OTSR as a qualification for 10 points and immi accepted it.

Regards,

Richard

Hello, thanks for your post, very informative. I am looking to move to Victoria. My question is in terms of qualifications the only formal plumbing qualifications I have a City and Guilds level 2 technical certificate. However I have had the ACS/Gas Safe registration for over 10 years. As well as unvented/water regs. Will this affect the time I can claim as time served on my Immigration application?

Hi
You can conduct the skill assessment with Vetassess but you have to take permission from TRA and travel to south africa or London for practical assessment

Question Re: Are you a Plumber wanting to move to Australia? Read me for advice!

Hi, thanks for writing this, it's brilliant! I know this is an old post but wondered if anyone had any info or advice? (Should manybe just start a new post? - I'm new to this site).

Anyway, my partner has a property maintenance business - started in 2013. He started just himself cleaning carpets but has expanded the business and now provides contractors, mainly for letting agents - plumbers, electricians, joiners etc as well as doing some domestic work and pre sale makeovers etc. He has been working alongside the plumber for a while now, performing some minor plumbing work himself and wants to gain plumbing qualifications through a trades school (we've done some homework and found a reputable one). So the question is - if he did the relevant qualifications and got his CSCS card, along with another 3 years work experience, would this be enough to apply for a skilled visa visa (instead of doing a 4 year apprenticeship or however long it is - that's not an option for his given his age - 36 and running a business).

Any advice / info appreciated. Many thanks.
