Hey all,

I'm looking to go to Australia for about a year, on the working holiday visa, but I'm just wondering how strict they are about needing a certain amount of money in your account to get your work permit? ($4k or something?).

I did two years in Canada and they never asked for any proof on either entrance, but obviously I don't want to take risks with it.

Also, does anyone know, if I can secure a job before I head over there, will they be less likely to demand proof of funds, or is a job offer irrelevant to them?

Many people will not be stopped by immigration. But some are and if you were, they would want to see proof of funds. If you don't have them, you face not being allowed entry.

I glanced at some of your other posts and noticed you were once rejected for a visa? If so, this may flag you for a stop.

Your chances of securing a job prior a very slim unless you have specialist skills such as nursing.

I wasn't rejected for a visa to Australia. I'm not sure exactly, but you the only thing I can think of was when my application was rejected for Canada because of a very small error on a form (i.e. I was never rejected at the border for the work permit itself). They then reviewed the process and granted my POE letter after all, then I got through the border without any problems. Would that make any difference?

Yes, because whether the visa was subsequently issued or not, you were in fact refused a visa to Canada.

Oh that's an interesting one... if they went on to reverse the decision on the very same visa application (I.e you didn't have to initiate a new application to get your Canadian visa), then they didn't actually refuse a visa for you. So I'd say it is quite material whether they went on to issue the visa or not.

Australian immigration would have to rely on disclosure of such matters to them, and you'd be a bit of a fool to lie to them. But I think you've a very good case for legitimately declaring that you have not been refused a visa. No doubt an area of mixed opinion. It's like failing an exam, then on a remark passing. You didn't sit the exam again they just reviewed your initial submission and you passed. It wouldn't be disingenuous to claim you passed and didn't fail in that case.

On the matter of how strict are they on money... I've no idea. Agree most people probably don't get asked. Can't see how you would have made an automatic screening list for Australia from what's been written in this thread. They probably care more to know about money if you haven't got a ticket to fly out of Australia. You can sleep in the gutter and eat possums for all they care, but if you don't leave when your visa expires... Oh they don't like that.

I never even considered that the initial rejection would even show up anywhere, considering they reviewed their own process and subsequently granted my POE with zero input from me. I would never have thought to mention it at all had you not brought it up.

I'm just kind of spitballing but one plan is to go to work in Perisher for the ski season, so I would be applying for jobs before I left, and could potentially get one secured from here (I know they did that with people in Whistler for sure, with Skype interviews etc.) and I also have some other contacts in Melbourne, so if I could do the same thing and get a job before I get out there, I was considering maybe chancing it and going over earlier, before I have the $5k Australian saved up.
