Because the standard of living is better than the UK. Better salary and cheaper to live etc. We live near the Black Forest which is absolutely lovely but very cold in winter.

Isn't obvious? Any place but europe/uk has got to be better. As far as
Australia goes, it's THE place to be. The US would be a close second.

Boring and backward Europe/uk would be about in 160th place............
