Who have you told about emigrating?
 

Dear All,

Just interested to know if you have told work colleagues, all your family, close friends etc about hoping to emigrate.

If you havn't when do you plan to tell them ?

We have only told a couple of people as the process takes such a long time. The sooner you tell your family the more they worry about it. Mind you I suppose you begin to feel a bit guilty about deceiving people after a while.

Hey, we didn't HAVE to tell anyone, our 6-year old daughter took care of THAT! And we haven't even put in our applications yet (New Zealand)!

From talking to people years before I actually could lodge an application
(before I had a degree) I noticed that people think it's a matter of a couple
of weeks and then you are off to the other side of the world.

Even if they listen to you telling them that it may take over a year
or maybe two, there still an air left around this that makes people start
treating you as if you are going to be gone tommorow.

I personally told my family when the subject naturally came up, and told my
direct boss because I needed a letter from him (and explained him the
implications). I suspect this has leaked to others in the company because I
sometiems brag about stories from Australia, without mentioning anything about
a visa, but also not lying and denying that I do anything about this (I just
ignore questions about this).

So the bottom line - I'd recommand you to try to keep as low profile as you can
about this. If it's people you care about they should understand your motives.

I've told all my close friends and absolutely no-one at work except for an
old boss who was very obliging with my reference (maybe because he wants to
go as well!) He's very tight-lipped so I'm sure no-one knows.

It gets sticky when you want to invite some of your more agreeable work
colleagues out with your friends for a coffee or dinner. My wife nearly
slipped up last night when she urged a friend to come and see us in
Australia in front of a colleague! Hopefully he'd had too much ;)

As soon as we started seriously thinking about it we told everyone.
My boss said, "good luck, wish I could do it". Our parents hate the
idea but at least they know they will probably see a lot less of us
and have the opportunity to do more with us and our kids before we go.
Surprisingly I have been offered a different job at work that requires
the company to spend a lot of time and money training me even though
they know I may go to Australia soon. Its nice to feel we arent
hiding anything, would feel most uncomfortable otherwise.

We told family when we were certain it's what we wanted and work colleagues when my husband got confirmation of a job offer. Everyone is so excited for us and floods us with questions all the time which is great if you're having a good day but terrible if you are waiting for things to happen and stressed out.
