Hi,
As you say, the trade assessment is the first step. Your husband (being a bricklayer) will need to have an assessment by Trdaes Recognition Australia (TRA). This can be quite difficult as it requires getting a lot of paperwork, ref's, cert's and so on.
Have a look at http://www.workplace.gov.au/workplac...nAustralia.htm for starters on what they require. The rules and reg's are quite complex so its best if you peruse at your leisure!!
Also, a good one to check out is booklet 6 from www.dimia.gov.au . It gives loads of information on emigrating as a skilled person. Again, lots of info so best to print a copy and go from there.
..you gotta start somewhere,
best of luck.

We were in a dilemma whether to deal through an agent or not.
In the end we had a look at the application forms to see if could understand them ourselves.
We came across a few questions that we were stuck on.
We also felt that it would be added pressure on an already busy lifestyle and additionally we wanted to get it right first time.
That was the reason we went through an agent and paid lots.
In hind sight, if I had found this sight back then, maybe we would have gone it on our own. Lots of others have, just look at this site! And they have been successful!
Everyone on this site is helpful and ready for your questions.
Don't get me wrong I don't regret going through an agent, but sometimes there are things you feel you could have done quicker yourself such as chasing up things. But they certainly took the pressure of us thats for sure.
Which is what we wanted. And the dreaded nail biting wait that we are in now would have happened with or without an agent.

We went through an Agent and I must say I dont regret this at all - the paper work is daunting and they do break this down for you, give clear precise instructions on what is required from you, review your reference letters to make sure they are in the correct format required, send you all the relevant forms in the order they need completing, put all the forms and documents to relevant departments in the correct manner and they answer questions via email (our agent is based in Perth) overnight and sometimes same day.
I am a paper-pusher by trade and mega organised by nature and even with the absolutely brilliant advise from this site I am still happy we chose this route. It is not cheap though! either $3600 in one installement or two installments of $2000 and this does not include fees for various application stages. If you are interested they are AMA (Active Migration Australia) at: www.theozlife.com or email: [email protected] and introduce yourself and I am sure she would be happy to answer any initial questions.
Either way - it is HARD work!! We are now at the waiting stage and we are bricking it! Can look back and laugh at the probs we had finding people, companies gone bust, one company who objected to OH leaving and refusing letter etc. But we are soooo sure this is the right thing for us at this time in our life.
If interested we are applying for 136 independent (Plumber).

hi
thanks for your advice. done abit of research myself and printed some
forms for 136(bricklayer). spoke to a aussie chap at the visa bureau in
london who qouted 3500 approx so i suppose thats about the going rate.
would love to think that i could do all this paper arranging myself but
also dont want to mess up chance of visa if something is incorrect. so
what i suppose i'm talking myself into is that agents it is, just need
to choose one!!!.
think that this is going to be a long road but hope it leads to
australia!

Hey Cookies, it is a long road (although not as long as it has been in
the past).
Good luck with it, you'll always find plenty of support whichever route
you decide to take. :)

$4000!!!!!!!!!!!! Ouch
You can get it done for this amount INCLUDING all fees if you shop around.
Check out the reviews on britishexpats.com (using the search tool)....you will see that Gomatilda and George Lombard are rated very highly!
