STA travels (www.statravel.com) has great fairs, but you may not be
eligible for all of them (age/student status requirements). Check it
out anyway.

I would hope the big online ones (Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity) would offer
some cheap ones.

From my experience there are two choices for you :
1. If you are flexible for time/schedule -
Call up Air NZ, Qantas, American Airlines and United - ask them what is the cheapest ticket they can issue - they WILL ask you for a travel date - tell them you do not care, but want to know what is the best deal they can offer - once they tell you the rates, ask them what are the restrictions and what are the travel dates.
2. If you are date restricted -
Buy Boston to LA as domestic fare (travel to LA a day ahead) from the best deal available on the internet. Buy LA to Brisbane/Sydney from Air NZ or Qantas - this should be around US$900
FYI - I get United offers regularly that quote around US$1200 - US$1400 Boston to Sydney/Brisbane/Melbourne with a maximum stay of two weeks.
