Default what are the things to do while performing the initial entry

Hi All,

I am planning to make an initial entry by next month. The following are the doubts which I seek a feedback from the experts out here.

Do I need to do the following

1. apply for medicare card
2. Open bank account
3. register at centrelink for job search
4. Apply for TAX number

Anything else to do which is important,

Rgds,

Prince

Yes, these are the things you need to do after moving to Australia. You can apply for Tax File Number online at the ATO website. Forms for Medicare card are available at HIC website, and Bank accounts can be usually opened on the web even from outside Australia, but you would need to show 100 points identification before they can be activated.

To confirm your identity, you need to show documents which can give 100 points. Passport gives 70 points and a credit card 25, etc.

Prince,

Your sequence seems slightly out. You need your Tax File Number (TFN) before you open your bank accounts ideally. Although you can certainly provide your bank with your TFN when you get it - that's a simple enough process too.

Most banks need to be reminded that a recent migrant to Australia is entitled to open a bank account solely on the strength of his/her passport. Most bank officers insist that recent migrants pass the 100-point test of identity.

You should get your driver's licence quickly, as the licence is the most commonly accepted proof of identity and address. But in order to get your driver's licence, you will again need to prove your identity. A bank ATM card, and medicare card will help in this respect.

The job search facility at Centrelink isn't something I'd rely on heavily in your job hunt. Try seek.com.au instead.

Good luck & congrats on your visa.

Within the first 4 weeks of your arrival in Australia - your passport alone
is sufficient identification to open a Bank Account!!

Good Luck!!

We already have a bank account in Oz which we got with out a TFN. We needed 100 points of ID, which were passport, credit card and drivers license. You can open an Oz bank account with out a TFN if you have an OZ address you can use for correspondance, we use my mother in laws. This is with Bendigo Bank and money can be transferred across from English bank account for about £10.
