Default What have i let myself in for?!

Hello, wow, what an awesome forum, loads of good friendly advice! My
partner and i are just starting the ball rolling applying for subclass
136 visa. Its pretty daunting stuff..we're going to do it with-out an
agency, is this how most people do it?
I think i've totally underestimated the time its going to take!! (and
the cost!!) I suppose its different for everyone but whats the average
time for the whole process?
Has anyone else applied for this visa with occu as Chef?

Sorry for bombarding you all with questions!! Reading everyones
experiences and obsticles has got me well freaked out!! :D Any
information (or re-assurance!!) would be much appreciated...

see recent post below:

TRA is fairly involved at the best of times - the cook/chef situation makes it even more complicated. Processing times for TRA were about 4 months until recently they came down to about 2 months - very recently they are down to about 2 or 3 weeks - not sure how long that will last. Processing of visa about 6 to 12 months.

Costs A$500 for TRA application and A$1,935 for visa. My advice is get professional help with it all or at least just for the TRA part.

Hello Hayley
Good luck to you both, you can, if you feel the need, get an agent just for the TRA part, it is the most difficult hurdle !!
If you decide not to, then ask away and make sure you feel you have added everything you can before submitting it.

Welcome to this Forum just keep tuned in and you will learn a lot of really useful stuff and make new friends as well.
One of the very good things about this Site is you can and probably should look at other forums here like the "Lifestyle Australia Forum" and the "Returning to the UK " Forum.Trying to get a more balanced view like I am suggesting is something I omitted to do and now regret.Just don't get carried away by any particular forum. All are good but in their own way.Take from each and achieve the balance that is right for you.
Good luck

Hi Hayley

My husband is applying as a chef and our case isnt straightforward.

We are using Glen Newton for our TRA and George Lombard for our visa.

Although George has his own man to handle the TRA side.

You can do it yourself, but you have to have it to specification and meet the exact requirement.

Agents cost, but if there is any doubt on your application or you don't think you can deliver in the way the TRA want, then I would invest in an agent.

Why not become a proper member of this site? You will make some good mates on here and perhaps find some support as well.

Good luck

Samantha

You have let yourself in for a rollercoaster ride of sleepless nights, frustration, migraines, self doubt and and an ever increasing drink problem. But the rewards are worth it. Being assessed as a chef is one of the most difficult, I know I failed first time. A good migration agent is worth every penny, for peace of mind if nothing else. And the help and information on this forum is fantastic, so good luck and go for it!

Thanks everyone, the advice is invaluable! I think we had underestimated
the amount of work involved with the TRA and have decided that an agent
is deffo the way forward...we cant really afford to repeat the process
:p I think its a case of being realistic and not getting carried with
dreams of swimming pools and palm trees just yet! :o

Has anyone else been through this at my age..i'm only 23 and my partner
will be just 21 when we apply...do you think this will count against us?
we have lived togther for a year and a half and been engaged for about 8
months.. maybe we should get on with it and get hitched. arf. ;)

If your partner is only 21 and is the one being assessed you will probably struggle to meet the criteria for chef which is a 4 year apprenticeship as a cook plus 3 years as a chef. If there has been no formal apprenticeship then he has to prove 6 years vocational training plus 3 years as a chef.
If he applies as a cook (which is still 60 points) then this is reduced to 4 years apprenticeship or 6 years vocational training. This is where the expertise of a migration agent is invaluable.
Also the process is easier if you are a married couple.
Best wishes.
