waiting for US Background Check
Hi,
I sent police certificates and medicals mid jan 2003. called ASPC
yesterday to find the status of my application(skilled-STNI). They are
waiting for US background check. I read from some earlier posts which
state that it is taking long for US check. Are there many people who
are waiting long (after medicals) because of US background check only?
Please respond coz then we all get an idea of reasonable length of
time to expect our visas.
Thanks

I think I'm in the same boat as you, but haven't been told the
reason why I'm waiting.
I sent my UK & US police certificates and medical to London
(business visa) around Jan 11th. All I've been told is that
internal procedures are taking longer than expected.
I was asked for my old social security number in December.
Presumably that's being used to check my history.

Re: waiting for US Background Check
I did my medicals in June 2002, since then I've been waiting for the
result. I had a response from the immigration official that they are
doing my back ground check. I am an Indian citizen residing in USA,
was in Australia for 2.8 yrs.

Re: waiting for US Background Check
Hi Immi_info,
to speed things up then it might be a good idea to obtain an FBI clearance
and send it to DIMIA. Costs $18 and takes about 4 weeks.

Re: waiting for US Background Check
Jani- That's weird because other people have gone through this in 2
months. Is your case processed at Adelaide, or Washington DC, or
elsewhere? I remember Mr Lombard had some comments about the US background
checks taking approx. 9 months.
George, any idea why this delay in US character checks?

Re: waiting for US Background Check
Background checks are done by the Australian authorities directly.
What they do exactly depends on a range of factors, including
someone's nationality, countries of previous residence, employment,
military service etc.
They are done in addition to whatever police checks the applicant is
required to supply.

Re: waiting for US Background Check
is fbi clearance asked by dimia and does it speed up the process? i
will just send a local police dept. certificate. thats what it says in
form 47p. i also heard that even if the applicant goes thru the longer
process of sending state pol. certificates along with local, dimia
will do its own checks anyways.

Let's hope these background checks don't take more than a year otherwise
we'll have to redo the police clearances.
