Re: voting.
From the AEC website:
http://www.aec.gov.au/_content/what/faqs/enrol_gen.htm
------
Who can enrol to vote?
Any person who:
- is 18* years of age or over,
- is an Australian citizen, or
- was a British subject on a Commonwealth electoral roll as at 25
January 1984. (British subjects not on the roll as at that date are
not eligible to enrol even if they were resident in Australia at that
time); and
- has lived for at least one month at their current address (or within
the division).
*If you are only 17 years old and an Australian citizen then you may
provisionally enrol.
------
Note: British subject = citizen of a member country of the (British)
Commonwealth.

Re: voting.
I think permanent residents can vote in NZ after one year's residence.
In Australia you need to be a citizen, but the two year wait for
citizenship is not that long.

Re: voting.
I think it is the same as the rest of Australia. If you don't vote, you get a fine.

Thanks, Rob - my eyebrows just about jumped off my scalp when I read that
you get to vote with PR.
I wouldn't mind, but was simply surprised.

PR gives you the right to vote?!
Thought only citizens can do that (and get fined too).

Re: voting.
It is a commonly held idea that voting is compulsory in Australia. This is
incorrect. It is compulsory for citizens to show up at the polling booth,
collect the voting papers and have their name crossed off the electoral
roll. You are then at liberty to tear up the voting papers and throw them
away if you don't want to vote.
