Question Vetassess practical examination for 4211-11 motor mechanic

Hi,

My freind is currently applying for a visa under general skilled visa program and obviously has to have his skills assessed by VETASSESS. He has carried out the first bit and paid $600AUD and has received his 'competency profile assessment' back from VETASSESS stating that he is 'level 2 optional' which basically means he may proceed to practicall assessment but should be cautious as he is not fully competent in all areas in particular 'auto-electricals'.

We are trying to find anyone who has been on this particular exam that can provide useful feedback as to how it went and what exactly was involved. He is very nervous (Understandably) about paying $1500AUD to go on an examination that VETASSESS are basically stating that there is a good chance he may fail.

Any feedback/help would be gratefully appreciated..

Rob

P.S. Im currently going through the process of Skilled state sponsored program with Victoria. I have had my skills assessed and accepted by ACS as an IT Manager with MCSE qualification which would appear is recognised by ACS (happy dayz). I placed my application on line December 2007 all done without the aid of an agent yipppeee...I am now in the lengthy waiting process...Boo friggity hoo....

Anyone need any information/advice on applying for this type of Visa then give me a shout...

Hi

The next vetassess practical is 1st week in April, which I feel your friend may miss as I think it is fully booked. He could apply for the next practical in July and during this time he could brush up on the skills he feels he is having problems with. He could ask his employer if he could do more work with auto-electrics or maybe he could ask at a local college if they do a mechanics course and ask to join in for the electrics part of the course. (only an idea, not sure if a college would allow this)

If your friend looks on the vetassess website it has a list of what is required for them to do etc, this may be helpful for him.

Hope this helps

Louisa

Hi Louisa,

Many thanks for the info, he will be applying for the July exam and we will look into ways in which he can brush up on his electrical skills. It is not possible for him to ask his employer as they sub-contract the electricals out to third parties. This is common for smaller garages as they do not employ specialist auto-electricians for this reason.

Thanks again for the reply

Hi Rob

My O/H is also doing the practical in April, he also works in a small garage and like you say the electricals are sub-contracted out to third parties. He is a bit nervous on the electrical side.
Like Louisa says tell your friend to look at the vetassess website it has information on the practical assessment.

Hi, Thanks very much for the reply, would it be too cheeky to ask after your O/H has been for the exam in April to reply to this thread with his experience etc..?

Hey, Just wanted to say good luck to your partner with the exam next week . Is it in Accrington? It says from 7th to 12th April, is it just two of those days? If so which days is your partner doing?

Hi Rob

Thanks!!!!! But can't wait for it to be over. Yes it is in Accrington, one day. If you look on the vetassess website in the candidate guide it does say what to expect on day, tools to bring, sample activities etc etc this is what we have also received in the post.

Try this link for the candidate guide.

Hey, thanks very much for the link. I will print this off tomorrow to put my freind at least in the picture of what to expect. It would appear to me that these exams are fairly informal and the fact that you can ask questions etc during the tests is encouraging.

We thought that the test was over two days so that will also put his mind at rest a little bit further. Long day though eh? Was looking at the schedule, boy they like to get their money's worth out of ya eh? And your paying for that aswell...

Anyway thanks very much for the update and link. Best of luck for your test look forward to hearing that you have passed and are on your way to getting your Visa...

My friend had a read through that link you gave me and boy has it made a difference. He's not over confident but said that he feels a lot better about it all now thanks to you...

Hey, how did it go at the assessment? Hope it all went well, any advice/info would be very welcome and appreciated. My freind is definately going for his assessment in July this year.

We are still waiting for Case Officer. My brother got his Visa on Saturday morning, happy days one down one to go then my parents are comming over later next year to retire, one big happy family....

Kinda puts pay to all the rumours of the fact that the OZ gov are not issuing any more visas until July eh?

Hi

OH did the practical test last week. He seemed happy with the practical side, but there were a few sticky technical questions.

He got there quite early (before 7.30am) and left about 6pm.

The practical did consists of jobs in the candidate's guide with the assessor asking questions. The tools were all provided for them.
There was a one to one interview with the assessor. Hopefully it will be good news fingers crossed.

Congrats on your brother getting the visa.
