To use a shipping company or not
hi
can anyone please advise me what to do for the best, we are hoping to get our visas through for the end of jan early feb, we are not planning on taking and big furniture, only personel things like photos ect, but we dont know if to use a shipping company for the childrens toys or to sell everything here and buy new there, as things take three months to arrive anyway, we will have the extra luggage allowance of 40kg each and there is four of us, so we can try to put as much as we can in cases, although i dont know if this is allowed, would we be stopped at the airport, any advice would be much welcome.

We're only taking personal things. All in all it adds up to about 10 boxes as it is quite a shock once you sort it all out what you really need to take (1 box was purely for photos!). I got a quote from excess baggage and it worked out around £450 for those 10 boxes. http://www.excessbaggage.com/
I can't see why you would be stopped at customs so long as you are not packing anything illegal.

Re: To use a shipping company or not
I used Excess Baggage, though for airfreight of a couple of boxes, rather than sea. No complaints; I've also heard other good reports of Seven Seas - I just used Excess Baggage cos I could dump the stuff on the way out of Heathrow!
I would certainly advise shipping some stuff - aren't your kids attached to their toys at all? Its like Christmas when you get the stuff, a really good feeling, and it makes you feel at home having familiar things.Might help the kids to settle.

Re: To use a shipping company or not
Hi Andy,
Perhaps it is an idea to use a shipping company with at regular service
New Zealand or Australia (don't know where your going to).
This way you could pack your cargo your self and simply get charged a
rate per CBM.
Yes you are correct I work for a freight forwarding company in New
Zealand and have the unfortunate experience that many people using
freight forwarders are ill informed and quite often frustrated when the
come and collect their goods on the other side. Mostly about the local
charges in New Zealand that are unexpected.
Although it looks complicated it is not.
If it is New Zealand that your going to and you want to try something
different let me know.
You pack your cargo. (in solid boxes or a crate)
And deliver this to one of our depots in the UK (lets pick the one in
Grays for argument sake)
Measure the cargo (sorry I'm one of those metric people) by highest,
widest and longest points). Lets say this is 2 CBM.
For 2 CBM we currently have a rate of USD 260 per CBM = USD 520 (which
with the ROE of today = aprox 270 pds).
This will cover
packing in the container in the uk
Freight
All local charges in New Zealand bar
Customs clearance and MAF clearance
(incl free storage of 3 days upon devanning in New Zealand)
If you do your own customs clearance and MAF clearance (which will
probably take you about 1 hour of your time) you can simply collect the
cargo from our stores in Auckland / wellington or CHCH.
This providing there are no inspections required by MAF or Customs. We
can talk later on what to do to minimize the change of those.
Incidentally if no inspections are required there is no charge for
customs clearance (if you do this yourself) and MAF will be NZD 28.70.
As said this will work for New Zealand. If you go to AUS I can do a
similar system with our office in Australia.
Let me know if this interest you as I will have to inform you on things
like insurance (which is add and optional) and how to pack your cargo.
Cheers
