UK Passport needs renewing...what happens if visa due to expire too?

UK Passport needs renewing...what happens if visa due to expire too?
Friend shortly needs to go back to UK...his UK Passport has expired, he can renew this no problem but it contains his permanent residency visa, which I'm guessing gets put into his new passport? Trouble is there is less than 2 months remaining on the visa so if he went on his planned dates the visa would expire while he was in the UK...what does he need to do to ensure he will be able to re-enter?

once he gets his new passport, he needs to apply for a Residents Return visa.
