Travelling from Sydney to Cairns
We are still waiting for our visas - surprise, surprise - applied October 2001 so the application is probably somewhere between London and Adelaide now - or so we hope.
We are trying to plan our route and where to stop off when we do get out there. We are hoping to start in Sydney, then hire a car or campervan and drive on up, ending up in Cairns. We would be grateful for any tips on the best places to stop off at, where not to bother going, how long it would take. We will ideally be looking for somewhere that we would like to stay for a few months, to see if that is where we would like to settle. Any advice would be gratefully received.

I would say check out Byron Bay, NSW and Surfers Paradise, QLD
