It matters to him. He has said so.
It also matters to people like check-in staff who do not wish to send their time phoning Canberra to see if they are allowed to et the person board the plane.
It matters to the DIBP staff who have to deal wth the phone calls and work out whether the person has a valid visa.
Updating DIBP with Form 929 means the details are on the system and things like check-in delays canbe avoided.

No the Australian visa is readily transferred to a new passport. They just don't issue the stickers any more, not for the first visa or any subsequent ones. But the electronic visa is easily transferred. The OP is right to want to go through that process rather than faff about with two passports and have airline staff needing to make additional checks at the counter.

With the greatest of respect, I am generally happy for you to try and help if no 'Australians' are around but when it's explained why your information in a particular instance is incorrect, do us all a favour and just accept it and move on. You know as well as I do how much damage even fractionally incorrect immi information can cause. Sometimes you're wrong and it won't kill you to admit it once in a blue moon. Many thanks.

OP you've been given the correct information from Pollyana and Brit. It's very easy to do and you won't have a problem.
