Default Time of sunset in Brisbane?

I've read a few things about it getting dark early in Brisbane but didn't pay that
much attention to it. Now I've just read a post that suggests it gets dark at 5pm in
winter (that's better than the UK so that's fine) and dark at 7pm in the summer
(which is not good).

Does anyone have any info on this? I can't believe that it gets dark at 7pm. That's
only a 2 hour difference between seasons whereas the UK has around 4 hours difference
even when you discount daylight savings.

Please tell me that I won't be going to country where it's dark all year round when I
get home from work.

Hi Dean, Yep, it caught me out on my recent trip to Brissy, couldn't get used to the
fact that it was like an English Summer day (shorts and t-shirt) but was pitch black
by 5.30pm. I have not yet experienced summer over there yet but I'm told that it is
dark by 7pm. This is probably due to the fact that Brisbane is much closer to the
Equator than England so sees very little daylight variation (the opposite applies to
places in the far North and South, 24 hour daylight in Summer and darkness all day in
Winter. Dean (me not you)

So it's true then? Mmmm. That will take some getting used to. I looked up some posts
on daylight savings in Queensland on Deja.com which made for some interesting
reading. Talk about heated. It seems that most of the population prefer the dark. I'm
not passing any judgement here but it seems odd to 'want' it to be dark when you get
home from work so you can't enjoy the evening light.

I appreciate the equator logic but with a sunrise of 5am the number of daylight hours
are not really that different only the fact that a whole state prefers to sleep
through the first 2 or 3 of them.

I've never understood this issue even in the UK. If it's dark at 7pm why not go to
work at 7 or 8 am and leave at 3 or 4pm? If everyone does it what's the problem?

The light evenings in the UK are one of the things I look forward to in the summer.
Going out for walks, sitting in the garden etc. aren't the same in the dark.

I'm going to Brisbane to enjoy the differences in our countries not complain about
them but this one did throw me a curved ball. It reminds me of all the farmers in the
UK moaning about daylight saving. Why don't they get up an hour later and go to bed
an hour later? Isn't a clock a human invention anyway? Maybe I'm missing something.

Here ya go, and as it says "Make corrections for daylight saving time where
necessary" Taken from http-
    ://www.auslig.gov.au/geodesy/astro/sunrise.htm

If I read it correctly, the latest sunset in Brisbane is 18:47 + 1 hour for DST, i.e.
a quarter to eight. You get an extra 45 mins before sunset in Adelaide.

It's 8:10pm right now in Wales, UK and the sun is on the horizon (I live by the sea
and get an accurate sunset time). So this isn't too bad IMO.

Thanks for the info. I know what you mean about the sunset at this time of year in
the UK. It's fine.

I just look at it from the point of view that one hour of light a day is 5 a week
(don't care about weekends - I'll get up earlier) 20 a month and 220 a year. Not to
be sniffed at.

Thanks Rob for the link.

However, any people bound for Brisbane should bear in mind that Queensland doesn't
operate Daylight Savings Time. Which is the main reason why it gets dark so much
earlier in Brisbane. In Sydney at the height of summer the sun sets around 8pm
(daylight saving time). Melbourne is further to the west and south, and so gets
daylight until about 8.45pm. The end of civil twilight comes about 30 minutes later.

Different policies on daylight savings result in a 1 hour time difference between
Brisbane and Sydney from late October to late March.

The Northern Territory doesn't operate DST (understandable given that most of its
population is in Darwin). Less understandable is WA, with gives Perth the same
problem of a relatively early sunset in summer (sunset 7.22pm on mid summers day).

Both QLD and WA have voted in referendums not to have DST.

There's information on DST in Australia at: http://www.dstc.qut.edu.au/DST/marg/daylight.html

Very, unusually, warm. I enjoyed feeling a warm breeze instead of a cold one.
But then, I only count Brisbane as being 'too hot and humid' for about 2-3 weeks
each year.

I asked hubby did he miss evening light and twilight. He looked puzzled (must've been
here too long!). Yes, the sun sets early (and abruptly- no twilights in Brisbane),
but you do get spectacular sunsets, and the early morning light is lovely for walking
the dog, going running, watering the garden, etc.

This Summer I am dreaming of having full airconditioning and plan to stay inside as
much as possible except when I go swimming. Schools

Dotty, if you hate the heat so much, and can't afford to go back to the UK, how about
Tasmania? You'd like it much better than Brisbane. What's the point of living in a
sub-tropical climate, and hiding in the aircon?

Nah. 6am usually. Sometimes 7am in winter. So what? Dinner and bed time are early too
for them. You can convince them it's bedtime at 7pm, because it's dark!

Twice since we have been here they tried to bring in Daylight Saving, the general gripe seems to be, who on earth would want any more hours of heat, when youve already had enough. Not that I really understood that as its still hot when it gets dark. Often any breeze drops too and its still stifling, dark or not.

On the positive side it is actually light before 5 am, the cooler temps, probably low 20,s are between about 2am and 6am, so I just get up then, walk, do housework, paperwork, whatever I cant stand to do later. You see heaps of people out gardening etc at 5am!, probably sounds a bit funny but it works. Winter here is lovely, the humidity goes away for about 3 months and we really enjoy that. Today Sept 1 is only the first day of spring and its already 28 degrees with very mild humidity.

Its fun for mums of young kids tho they usually arise with the sun and most here are long up by 5am!!! ( Black curtains dont work they hear the birds sqwarking). Enjoy!

The chart has calculated the times the wrong way around - it states that the sun
rises earlier in July than January. That's not the case - it rises around 4am in
January and around 6am in July. I've copied the actual times below:

Don't worry about the sun setting early (especially in June/July/August). Every day
you can take a lunch-time walk where the sun will shine brightly down to cheer you
up. Yes, you'll probably miss the long evenings - but the weekends will make up for
it. Most people with any sense try to get out and enjoy the weather - winter here
(June-August) has be experienced to be believed.

Good luck! AndyH.

I spent a few months in QLD and confim Dotty's POV - most people (but not backpackers! surprise surprise!) didn't seem to miss the evening sunshine so much as get up in the early am (5-6am) and enjoy the freshness of the morning - and were active a couple of hours earlier than is normal in the UK.

This might explain why some posters have said people go to bed at 9pm in Aus - it's the equivalent of 11pm in the UK in terms of 'hours awake'.

Just wanted to post a quick reply here. We have been in Brisbane now for 6 years and I still miss the long summer evenings of the UK. We came back to the UK for a holiday in June/July and it was SO nice to have daylight almost up until bedtime. Yes, people do get up earlier here and yes they do go to bed earlier but maybe because I am more of a night owl than a lark, this is one of the few things that I still haven't adjusted to.

The other thing is ... at mid summer because the sun rises later and sets earlier, than in more polar climes like the UK, the sun actually moves faster across the heavens ... ie your sun dial speeds up.

Also wonder if the actual time of mid-summer sunset in one's formative years fixes the earliest time one would retire to bed.

We've just returned from 5 weeks in Mooloolaba about 100k north of brisbane and we just accepted it as normal that the pubs were shut at 9pm and stopped serving food an hour or so earlier. We went to bed at 9ish and rose at 5am, this was totally alien to my wife who could win medals in a sleep competition, she didn't realise that there were two 5 o'clocks in a day. Plus point is that at 5am the beach/garden is tollerable even for me.
One point that was made by one of our Australian friends was that they didn't adopt the daylight saving time in Queensland because the farmers were adamant that the cattle wouldn't milk an hour later, there was me thinking how advanced they were as our cows in UK can't even tell the time yet!!!!!
