Unhappy For those that have already emigrated to Oz...

How much money (GBP) do you think would realistically/comfortably start a new life over in Australia?

We've got a figure in mind but we're not sure if it is enough to support ourselves for the first 6 months.

Hello Keely,
Does we include any children? Are you looking to buy a place during that time or rent? Where are you planning to live?
Will you need to buy furniture etc...

Hi,

Would love to know what that amount was. There are also two of us, would rent for 6months to a year so we could check out places, get jobs etc. No children but a dog. What would be the magic figure for 6 months? Also how hard is it to get a mortgage in Oz? We will have some equity from our house here but will still need a mortgage to get a house in Australi. How does it work? Is it the same as here? Do we need perm jobs and bank accounts etc???

Thanks

( Yes I to would be interested to know, but here first not on a PM. )

Thanks,

we are from the north west of england and in our opinion the cost of living is nearly the same in melbourne as it was in the uk. if you think you could live in england for 6 months without any income, you will be able to do that here in oz. we were here only a week living off our savings (car rental $60 per day, staying in a chalet on a caravan park $90 per night) we had to find unfurnished accomadtion fast. we got a 4 bedroomed house $250 per week. rob got a job into our 3rd week here. we furnished the house with essentials: 2 bedroom suits, dining suite 2 lounge suites, washer, dishwasher, fridge freezer, tv, dvd recorder and all bed linen pots, pans and cutlery all for about $10,000 and all extremely good quality furniture. we bought a nearly new car that cost $21,000
we only shipped a few things over. pleased we didnt fetch any furniture out here, and a few people we have talked to have said the same, unless you have antique stuff that is worth a lot of money, it is not worth sending.
for the past 6 months we have just been building up on our stuff. we have bought a plot of land and our own home should be ready about july.
hope this helps.
you can open a bank acount in oz from the uk, we used ANZ you can do this via their web site anz.com
if you have capital already, you will get a mortgage no problem, without a 3 month qualifying period as long as you are in full time employment (permanent contract)

Thanks for that. It is very reassuring.

We are selling our house so will have a bit of a nest egg to live on. We will be living with my brother but hopefully that won't last long as I don't want to put a strain on the relationship.

Thought we might buy a piece of land as soon as we get there so that we don't fritter the money away. We don't have a lavish lifestyle at the moment so feel the info you have given has put my mind at rest.

Thanks again

Yikes, $250 for a four bedroom house! That's amazingly good value compared to the cost of a 2 bed flat in Sydney. I don't understand how anyone can afford to live in Sydney... property prices there are more than the SE of UK!

In pounds how much a week for a 2-3 bed house (have a dog) in a nice suberb or Brisbane or Perth. Quite close to town so we can get used to it all?

I can only vouch for south east queensland (Gold Coast, Brisbane,
Sunshine Coast)

Average rental is anything from $200 to $500 per week depending on what
you want. To comfortably furnish a house including appliances, TV, Beds,
Sofas, Tables etc... you are looking at around the $10,000 - $15,000
mark but this is new and of good quality. Mortgages are as easy to get
as in the UK. You can take out a Low-Doc (Low Documentation) mortgage
without having to prove your income with interest rates at around 7%.
Decent second hand cars from $10,000 to $20,000 again depending on what
you want.

A magic fiqure i can not give but for me (2 people and a dog) We would
be comfortable on $40,000 which includes a car, furniture, 6 months
rent in a 3 bed house, fuel and shopping. The cost of living is getting
closer to that of the UK even though a Big Mac is half price!

Thumbs up Re: For those that have already emigrated to Oz...

We were thinking of taking over between £10 and £15k to cover us for approx 6 months as we were mainly concerned about property rental costs and cars.

Obviously if we got jobs pretty quick then our savings would be a back up for house deposits etc. We wouldnt bring anything over from the UK apart from clothes, cat and possibly a laptop.

We think we'll opt for Melbourne in the end but god knows what suburb (havent researched that far). I guess it depends on job availability for the two of us.

I doubt we'll apply for a visa until we've got a bit of money behind us, but we're keeping our house in the UK so we can rent it out and have a base should we ever have to come back.

If we end up staying in Oz, we would definitely look into building our own house as it seems to be the more favourite option. However I guess we'll find out more about the Oz lifestyle as a whole when we eventually get over there! lol

Thanks for the PM's and advice everyone

im talking dollars here. you can get units to rent here from about $150, usually 2 bedroom. but , when you have to take out a 12 month lease on property , and you maybe expecting all those visitors from england you may think that you need bigger. we are not city people, so if you want to rent nearer the city, expect to pay more. we have everything that we could wish for here, so much better than england. or else why did we bother
