Hi
Please can anyone advise if they have taken a car to OZ, and if so could you advise if you came across any problems.... I'm thinking of taking a vehicle to oz, but am a little concerned about afew points...
1) How would you go about getting insurance or registering the vehicle when you don't have a place of residence. Can I use a PO.BOX address?
2) Where can i find out about MOT/ADR testing?
3) Are there any compliance issues I have to consider!?
Is there any websites that can answer my questions!?
Many Thanks for any help!!

You need to start with (3) and add another consideration, that is
"Is my car suitable for Australian conditions?"

I know that my car will be suitable in AU, as it is a Mitsubishi Delica and although they are common over there the price tag even for a reliable but basic second hand one to over there is about AU$10,000 - AU$15,000, where here you can get newer models for about £3,000 so I am prepared to pay any fees really as that is a considerable price difference. - But as i say there seems to be a lot of other things i need to look into as yet... but again thanks!!

charges, you WILL need to have work carried out to have the vehicle comply to state transport regulations ie correct seatbelt/mountings fitted, odometer changed to read in kph, correct exhaust emission(for different type of fuel mixture) etc. Customs will not release the vehicle unless the vehicle is going to a place for making the vehicle compliant. Which means you can't just drive the vehicle of the wharf and down to the local Dept transport office to get a rego plate. You will then have to take the vehicle to a Dept of Transport inspection facility for the inspectors to check that the vehicle is compliant. The inspectors will reject the vehicle if it does not meet regulations or is substandard.
You WILL need to supply an fixed address for a place of residence as a post office box IS NOT acceptable as an address, except for the holding of mail, for identification purposes.

The Bloke,
I'm a temporary resident in Australia, and have applied and received a
two year spouse visa towards permanent residency. I migrated from the
U.S. Anyway, I found your remarks about shipping a car to Australia
interesting. I've got some comments and questions for you in this
area.
I'd like to buy (in the U.S.) and ship over a used, late model
Chevrolet Camaro or Ford Mustang because there's a huge price
advantage in purchasing such a car and shipping it when I next visit
the U.S. versus trying to buy such a car here. I know zilch about
Australian transport regulations, but I'm guessing that a recent
American car would meet compliance without much in the way of
alterations, except for its being left hand drive. This leads to my
questions. Is it acceptable to drive a left hand drive car over here
without getting into a major regulations problem? Second, would the
car be subject to a tariff or any extraordinary Australian tax if I
bought it in the states and shipped it to myself in Australia? Any
thoughts or web sites you might be able to direct me to re. these
remarks would be appreciated. Thanks.

I forgot to mention this, but it may or may not be relevant. I
purchased a new car in Australia shortly after arrival and it's my
main vehicle. This Australian car would remain my principal auto even
if I shipped over a second car.
