Default Sydney anyone?

Hi all,

everybody seems to be posting about Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne. Is
there nobody out there who's going to Sydney or preferably is already
there, as we might be going a lot sooner than ever expected due to an
unexpected job offer that came up.

Job will be in CBD area so we'll initially be looking for a flat or a
house to rent not too far away, definitely not as far out as
Parramatta. Does anybody have some tips about good areas to live in?
Two grown ups, no kids, couple of pets? Would prefer close to the
beach, not too expensive, quiet and with easy access to the city, but
then wouldn't we all!

Hope there are some people out there able and willing to give some
tips.

Cheers

Helen

Hi Helen
We're off to Sydney, in the last stages of processing now so shouldn't be long. We're heading to the Western suburbs (Kings Langley) initially to be near family, so sorry can't help with info on other areas. When are you hping to be there by?

Hi there

We live in ManlyVale - which is about 10 minute walk to Manly Beach.

2 minute walk to the main road (Condamine St) which is about 15 minute
drive to the city off peak and about 25 minute drive on peak if you have
more three passengers in your car/bus it.

Also the Manly ferry is available to the city (15 minutes by jet cat/30 by
ferry)

Quiet, new appts (we pay $360 a week for a brand new 2 br/big garden appt)
Love it!!

Cheap, close to city, close to a beach - you can pick up any two

And pets may be a problem: "No pets allowed" is usual clause in the tenancy agreement.

Hi- we may go to Sydney too and my sister already lives there. Suburbs depend on what you are looking for. personally I prefer the following especially if you don't have kids: Paddingotn, expensive but trendy, victorian houses, small gardens, nice shops, great cafes not too far from the beaches. Woolhara- well who wouldn't want to live here? great for young couples, good cafes/ restaurants/ food/etc/ Newtown - trendy inner city feel, good for restaurants, houses Ok , a bit run down but very easy access to CBD, beach suburbs running round from bondi- bigger houses still expensive but nice to be near the beach. Personally I don't like the North shore suburbs as they always seem a bit far out but some people swear by them. Manly is good but do you want to catch a ferry to work every day? nice for a while then a bit wearing. The road way is too far.Nice feel though , very laid back. Hope this helps

Hi Sue,

my husband will be there, if all goes well, early November. I won't be
out till January sometime as we don't want to put our two cats into
quarantine for any longer than the minimum 1 month which means we'll
have to wait it out here. Very complicated and specific rules as to
vaccination, waiting periods etc. Apart from that, because things have
happened so fast I'll need to stay to organise packing, shipping etc.

Nice to hear we're not the only ones going to Sydney.

Tatiana,

"cheap, close to to a beach, close to city" - tongue in cheek!!!!!!!!

I know pets are going to make it more difficult. But judging from
looking at many ads on-line there are also a fair number that don't
mind or say it's negotiable

.

Most expensive suburb in Sydney, by many people's reckoning.

We lived in Mosman when we first arrived a year ago (Mosman Bay). Was lovely, 20 minutes to the city by ferry and good location for Balmoral beach and driving to Manly beach/Northern beaches. The roads are VERY busy though and its VERY expensive - we paid $730 pw for a 3 bedroom appt with views over the bay. Its cheaper if you scrap the views or live on one of the extremely busy rat race roads, but I think overpriced.
We now live in North Sydney which is fantastic. Do not rule out N Sydney or Waverton. There are nice leafy backstreets, rents are OK (we pay $425pw for a new 2 bedroom appt in a block with a gym/pool) and transport is SO easy. Its 10 minutes to the city by train/bus/bike or 40 minutes walk over the bridge which is not a bad way to start the day.
We explored the Eastern suburbs and popular southern suburbs (Paddington, Surry Hills etc). They just seemed more overcrowded, dirty and felt more like living 'in' the city instead of that just 'out' of the city feeling you get on the North shore. Its a matter of personal taste.

Nice one. I've always thought of NSydney as a good trade-off. Would you
care to mention the road you live in, or one very close by as I'm not
exactly sure where N Sydney and Waverton cover. I used to live in Cremorne
Point which was wonderful - couldn't live there again though!

If Cremorne Pt. used to be wonderful, why couldn't you live there
again? Just interested.

Hi Helen,

just wondering if you could give me any more info on the transportation of your cats. Where are you exporting them from, are you using an agency, the cost, vaccinations required, etc. We have 2 cats we want to bring with us, but as we haven't got a leaving date yet, at this point we are only really investigating the best way to do it. You're welcome to contact me on my email address if you wish.

Cheers,
Elsie.

I had a 'corporate' arrangement

Plus we'd need something a fair bit bigger now. The wonderful view of the
harbour is still burned into the retina and a view of a tree and two lorries
would do just fine.

Hi there Helen,

We are off to Sydney, we arrive 9th October eeek.

We have rented temp for 5 weeks in Homebush Bay. We like the look of the area and there seems to be a lot of rental accommodation in that area, seems around $300 - $400 for 2 bedroom accomm, with pool and gym

Keep in touch if you like, I would be happy to help with info when I am there.

Take care and best of luck,

Nicki.
