Skills Assessment - Project Manager - HELP!

Hi all,

My OH is having a nightmare trying to find a job spec listed that suits his actual role. He is an engineering project manager (or more recently appointment programme manager) at a large aviation company (GE). The 'Engineering Manager' job spec is a perfect fit job spec wise except they expect that role to be at senior management level rather than mid-level and report directly into CEO/MD, which he does not. He has a bachelor's degree in Project Management. The other two Engineering roles (Associate and Technologist) don’t seem to be a good fit and require degrees in Engineering.

He has a trade background having qualified as a carpenter prior to going to Uni so intends on trying to move across to a construction PM role once in Oz as he believes that will be a better fit for him anyway. The construction and ICT PM roles require experience/qualifications in those sectors which he does not have. There does not seem to be a generic ‘Project Management’ role in the database but we could see that roles such as Project Coordinators are there, and these roles don’t fit either as they are not management level. Any ideas?

There is this - 1220.0 - ANZSCO - Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations, First Edition, Revision 1

Both occupations on the CSOL and assessed by Vetassess. Does that look like a match?

There is also an option for engineering manager to be assessed by EA (Engineers Australia) but I would assume this needs an engineering degree. May be worth asking though.

Hi old.sparkles. Thank you for your reply :) Unfortunately those positions aren't a match but that website was very useful and I've found one that may be. We were hoping to avoid having to get a mara agent but it's looking like that might be the best thing to do now since we don't have a definite job match.

Quick update (should anyone find it useful in the future) - We are going forward for skills assessment on '511112 program or project administrator' which he is over-qualified for but as he's worked his way up through the PMO office in the last 5 years so does hit the nail on the head with past experience and the role is still relevant to some of his day-to-day activities.

The role is currently on CSOL so fingers crossed!

As the occupation is only CSOL, have you checked to see if any states are sponsoring the occupation?

511112 program or project administrator might be on the CSOL, but it doesn't have any realistic options for offshore applicants at present, and hasn't for some time.

Richard

Isn't it available for sponsorship by SA for high point scorers (80 points)?

Well, I did say 'realistic'. 80 points are not realistic for a lot of people, but if you are lucky enough to be able to generate 80 points then this does gives you options. Apologies for not clarifying that.

Richard

No worries :)

Not sure reaching 80 points is realistic for OP's other half though, with only 5 years experience, but I think you can include the sponsorship points in reaching the total (reading SA's website) and there are 10 available if going 489 route so may be possible. Would have to sit IELTS though or other test to get the language points.

Hi both - yes aiming for 80 points. He's got IELTS booked for next week to try and get the extra points.

Good luck. There's good IELTS tips on YouTube.
