Highly unlikely that firefighter would be on a SOL. The fire services here generally have plenty of applicants domestically and always want to train their fighters from the base level upwards into the bargain.

It is possible that Fire Fighter may be on the new SOL but would you be able to get recognised as such - you would probably need an NVQ 4 or higher qualification and have 1 or 2 years experience as a firefighter, depending on the relevance of your qualification. No NVQ 4 or higher and it would not matter how many years of fire-fighting experience you had, you could not get the skills recognition.

Regards

And even firefighters of many years experience have been told they cannot just transfer, they have to start at the bottom again.

Fire and Emergency Workers (and Police) were on a recently published list (by Skills Australia) of specialist occupations that will form the basis of the new SOL. It does not mean they will be on the new SOL but I would disagree with the statement that it is highly unlikely that they will be on the new SOL. Just over 3 weeks until the new SOL announcement is due on 30th April, so it is all still just speculation.

I'd like to hope that some of the firefighters on here would be able to join up, but Qld certainly has always been adamant about wanting them to retrain from scratch, and is always oversubscribed with domestic candidates, which would seem to be at odds with them being on the SOL. Still, we shall see.......

Like to know what trade they are calling an "emergency worker" too.......any ideas Tony?

Hi Polly

Paramedics, search and rescue. Skill level for these is AQF cert IV so more likely to be on State Plan lists than the new SOL. I think I am warming to your highly unlikely statement.
