Default Reference letter from employer

Hi,

I am in need of a reference letter from my employer to lodge my application. I started working for this firm just 7 months ago and I dont want that the top management gets to know about my immig. plans and I really dont have any other things to pretend for taking the reference

Will it be Ok if a project manager who supervised me during my recent work writes a letter saying something like " I have been known to him in this xyz firm from this date and i have been performing xyz tasks

OR

It must be the Human Resource (HR) manager which DIMIA accepts as the issuing person for employment references.

pls. help

You may generally choose the first option, so long as the letter cleary states the author's professional relationship to you. However, such a letter will find it difficult to establish credibility if it mentions duration of employment, salary details and other terms of employment, details that are required by DIMIA.

Hi,

Give your project manager friend a list of everything that needs to be
included - full name, start date, job title, main duties, success at
carrying out these duties, any training undertaken in this employment, was
it successful, comments on your supervision skills if you supervise others,
communication skills, reliability, punctuation, works well as a team member,
able to work on own initiative, trustworthy & reliable & any other skills
that you have that might enhance your job prospects. All those lovely things
that employers like to hear. If you need an example letter, let me know.

It must be on headed paper, clearly signed & name of referee clearly typed
underneath including their job title. Make sure a contact phone number for
this person is also included as references are often checked by phone, by
all accounts.

Good luck.

Siobhan

Peter,

Is a signed (and stamped) note from company accounting, saying they
have paid my taxes, health, retirement insurance, etc. during my
employment in the company, a good enough proof of employment being
paid?

Potentially. I'd throw in a covering letter stating what the document proves and explaining the local terms and items on your note. DIMIA shouldn't be expected to understand non-Australian taxes, insurance etc.

Just my opinion.

Peter,

The notes to the application state that you should list the 5 main duties in the reference letter. Do you think you should mention thinks like training, punctuality, team worker etc, (see earlier posting) or should you just do as it says in the notes from the DIMIA? It seems some people are including their entire work history, I'm confused how much detail is required!

Hi Siobhan

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, I'd like an example letter as my
wife is having real trouble getting her manager to provide one. Helen
is a midwife and as they are so under-staffed, I think her manager is
trying to ignore her. I have suggested using her supervisor and want
to give an outline of what's required.
Much appreciated
David

TOB,

Personally, I would keep it objective (i.e. what you did, what your job scope was/is, your salary, your employment dates, your job title, awards - things that cannot be disputed). It isn't actually necessary for you to get a "glowing" account of yourself ("he's a good team worker, always on time, excellent English accent, loved by everyone, nice hairstyle") - that's subjective and isn't what DIMIA is interested in, although it shouldn't hurt.

Thanks Peter,

My husbands references are a one pager (on employers headed paper) and list eactly what the DIMIA notes ask for. Where it ask for 5 main skills these have been listed as bullet points giving detail but not rambling on. I'm sure if we go by the notes to the application we should be ok.

Thanks for you help.
