Default Re-entry to Australia with less than 6months on passport

We are perm residents of Australia and we are going on holiday in a couple of days time to Japan. I have just realised I only have 5 months till my passport expires. Does anyone know if I will be able to travel, or more importantly get back into australia

Australia does not require anything other than that the passport needs to be valid. However if you are doing a stopover anywhere en route they may have a rule about passport validity (eg Singapore requires 6 months).
Japan may also have a validity rule, so check that before leaving Australia if you haven't already

Thanks for that, I have read that its the same deal in Japan, but then again I've read so much conflicting info i don't know what to believe. One thing I know for sure is that immigration will give me hell if I get it wrong!

I am flying via KL but not leaving the terminal so I should be ok there.

You should be fine in KL, if you stay airside and don't enter the country.
