I have recently asked at the relevent authorities advice on taking our house rabbits with us. However one person thinks that there is no problem and another seems to think that no Rabbits are allowed to be imported.

Please could anyone advice on this....

well considering Australia has had a rabbit plague since some posh bugger imported two dozen for hunting a hundred plus years ago, i wouldnt think a couple more would make a difference.

Then again i dont know for sure. Maybe thats the exact reason they dont want anymore

Hi

I have friends here that have pet rabbits. The pet shops all have them so I don't know why you wouldn't be able to bring one more! Obviously there must be a reason though............

There are rabbits for sale in pet shops in Perth, but I prefer to buy
mine at the butchers. Much cheaper per kg, and they come ready-skinned.

I don't know the regs, but I can't imagine Ag, Fisheries & Forestry
welcoming immigrant bunnies with open arms at the airport. As I
understand it, rabbit = pest, plague, warren gassing and poisoning
programmes (shall I go on?) in their eyes. Someone has already
mentioned the rabbit-proof fence - a fascinating piece of Australiana,
very much in use during this drought to keep flocks of starving emu's
from the farmers' paddocks and waterholes. Not a pretty sight as they
trample each other to death attempting to get over the fence. It's not
all cuddly koalas and cute joeys here.....

(also considered a pest in most states, but totally inedible everywhere)

Hi,

Since pets from the UK go into quarintine, I'm sure rabbits aren't allowed.
Our dog went through Melbourne and all they had there were cats, dogs and at
times some horses.

Also, realistically, I think you would have problems with airlines.
Australia and NZ have very strict rules regarding animal importation. Have
you contacted Australian Quarintine to get the definite answer. I remember
their website was very useful, once you found the right pages.

You will NOT be allowed to import rabbits and only certain types are sold in
some States as pets....why? because Australian authorities are more than a
little sensitive (rightly or wrongly) about the previous rabbit plague. The
British Houserabbit Association has documented an outbreak of Rabbit
Hemoragic Disease. RHD is like Ebola. Rabbits died a very painful death. So
I guess with the relatively recent beef scares, the outbreak of foot and
mouth and the RHD there are substantial reasons for not allowing rabbits
into Australia. Rabbits already in the country are a different matter
altogether.

That won't work.
Hamsters are illegal, in Australia, as well as rabbits

Ok, I can see the point with rabbits, but why are hamsters illegal?

Hi,

Rabbits may be imported subject to you fulfilling all the
requirements. There will be quarantine charges upon
arrival and/or collection in Australia - a quarantine entry
fee and a daily fee. This information was correct in
October 2002, and you should check for any updates
since then.

Best Wishes.

Dear Rabbit lovers,

Until the arrival of the Barmy Army, rabbits were probably Australia's worse
exogenous pest.

Keeping them (the rabbits) as pets isn't going to make you popular with
people of my mother's generation, or anyone who has ever lived on the land
here. But with the arrival of the calicivirus there isn't such a problem at
the moment, so perhaps if you just mix with new arrivals, urban Australians
and very young farmers you won't get expressions of disgust and revulsion at
the idea that you could keep them as pets. Confrontational migrants might
like to use them as conversation starters.

It is possible, as Jas says, to import them. But I don't recommend it
unless you are a fan of social ostracism :-). Hamsters, on the other
hand...

Cheers

We have 2 rabbits, but I think after this post we will leave them at home. It would probably cost $100's or $1000's to take them. I may have to make up a story for the kids though.
