Question about state sponsorship
Hello all,
I am thinking of applying for Australian Immigration and had a few questions.
I am fine with living anywhere in Australia and my skill is in the critical skills list.
1. What is the very first thing I should prepare to start my application as a skilled worker? Is it the skills assessment?
2. Most of my work experience are part-time, 20 hours a week. Can part-time work be converted into equivalent full-time? Example: 2 years part-time is equivalent to 1 year full-time? Did people with part-time work experience successfully apply through skilled migration?
3. Which are the states that offer sponsorhip other than
Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and New South Wales?
4. Can one apply for multiple state sponsorship or is that not allowed?
5. How long does it take to get state sponsorship? Is there a website that shows the processing times for each state?
6. If one has a state sponsorship, how long does it take to get the permanent residence visa through skilled migration?
7. If one does not have state sponsorship, how long does it take to get the permanent residence visa through skilled migration?
I know these are many questions at once, but I would really appreciate your answers.
Thank you.

I am fine with living anywhere in Australia and my skill is in the critical skills list.
1. What is the very first thing I should prepare to start my application as a skilled worker? Is it the skills assessment?
- start reading: www.immi.gov.au and DIAC Booklet 6 and then go for assessment
2. Most of my work experience are part-time, 20 hours a week. Can part-time work be converted into equivalent full-time? Example: 2 years part-time is equivalent to 1 year full-time? Did people with part-time work experience successfully apply through skilled migration?
- Can't answer. May be other people will answer this.
3. Which are the states that offer sponsorhip other than
Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and New South Wales?
- ACT and Queensland
4. Can one apply for multiple state sponsorship or is that not allowed?
-Yes
5. How long does it take to get state sponsorship? Is there a website that shows the processing times for each state?
-processing time varies from state to state. Check the sticky thread for sponsorship links.
6. If one has a state sponsorship, how long does it take to get the permanent residence visa through skilled migration?
- It also varies but may be from 6 to 12 months.
7. If one does not have state sponsorship, how long does it take to get the permanent residence visa through skilled migration?
-Definitely more than 176 visa as per new priority.
I know these are many questions at once, but I would really appreciate your answers.
Thank you.

Thank you for your reply! I really appreciate it.
Also, about multiple state sponsorship--
Is it really possible to apply for mutiple state sponsorship?
Is there a document that states this or is this from your experience?
And does anybody know if part-time work experience can be converted as full-time equivalent? Ex) 20 hours a week for 2 years = 40 hours a week for 1 year. Thus, 1 year full-time experience???

1. What is the very first thing I should prepare to start my application as a skilled worker? Is it the skills assessment?
Yes. All applications start with a skills or qualifications assessment.
2. Most of my work experience are part-time, 20 hours a week. Can part-time work be converted into equivalent full-time? Example: 2 years part-time is equivalent to 1 year full-time? Did people with part-time work experience successfully apply through skilled migration?
DIAC look for full time work, but categorize it as 20 hours per week or over. Your work is on the border line.
3. Which are the states that offer sponsorhip other than
Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and New South Wales?
Queensland, ACT, Tasmania & Northern Territories
4. Can one apply for multiple state sponsorship or is that not allowed?
It's allowed, but you may find states ask you to declare it if you apply for more than one at a time.
5. How long does it take to get state sponsorship? Is there a website that shows the processing times for each state?
Usually around a month, depending on processing times.
6. If one has a state sponsorship, how long does it take to get the permanent residence visa through skilled migration?
DIAC recently announced all applicants on file will be assigned to a case office by 13/2/09, so they are really ploughing through them. I'd say allow 6-8 months maximum.
7. If one does not have state sponsorship, how long does it take to get the permanent residence visa through skilled migration?
Longer. How much longer, nobody knows because DIAC's new priority was only implemented this month.
Yes. All applications start with a skills or qualifications assessment.

Re: Question about state sponsorship
Thanks for the helpful answers!
But I am still a little confused on the visa types.
If I get state sponsorship, I can apply for either 176 or 475???
If that is the case, which visa has the faster processing times?
Also, I am going to do my skills assessment, but while that is pending, can I submit an application for state sponsorship?
I don't see states requiring to see the skills assessment.

I think, a bit research on www.immi.gov.au can make everything more clear to you.
Here's the answer of your questions:
- As of now both 176 or 475 is under priority processing as long as you have state nominations.
- 176 or 475 skills list are different from state to state.
- Some states need skills assessment before the application and some not.

Re: Question about state sponsorship
Thanks!
If I get 176 approved, what will the visa on my passport say?
Will it say "Immigrant visa" or "Permanent visa" or something else?
And how long will the visa be valid? (for the initial stamped visa)
And if I get 475 approved, what will the visa on my passport say?

Validity of 176: http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/968i.pdf

Validity of 475 visa: Don't know for sure, Somewhere between 2.5 to 3 years. Visa will also have a mandatory first entry date.

Re: Question about state sponsorship
It will be obvious from the visa label whether it is temporary or permanent. Permanent visas say "Holder permitted to remain in Australia indefinitely".

Wonder can you advise. My daughter cannot enter Aus on the entry date we have been given because she is sitting her GCSE exams both before and after the entry date this June.
I want to ask DIAC if they can extend for about a month, which should be enough. How do you think I should best approach this with DIAC.? Appreciate your thoughts, thanks.
