Rob,
Out of curiousity why did you come here? I notice quite a few
Australians come to work in the UK. Is it a quick way to make a wad
of cash to take back Down Under? Or perhaps an inquisitive look at
the Motherland(not intended to get a bite). Or is it simply that the
UK is such an easy place to enter and find work?
I have to say that I dont know of any Australians that come and make
the UK their home permanently.(well there is Kylie Minogue, Rolf
Harris) Yet I hear of hoards of Brits going Down Under on a permanent
basis. Why is that, do Australians hate our climate that much or is it
because they hate Poms?
Going off the beaten track a bit here but, I have told everyone I know
that we intend to emigrate to Australia and everyone only has positive
things to say about our plans. I am finding it hard to find anyone
who thinks its a bad idea apart from very close relatives,
understandably. It seems that Brits are much more keen to live
permanently in Australia than Aussies are to in the UK. Where I
wonder is the favourite destination countries for migrating Aussies,
USA perhaps?

I wasn't interested in making money in the UK, I was interested in my
"roots" my family history in Ireland, Wales and the UK is something that a
lot of Aussies are drawn to ......your history which is zillions of years
older than ours and to visit those places in reality is a wonder in
itself.....I have been there a few times and its great to visit but apart
from a very small amount of work ( a few weeks in relation to a job I was
doing) I have never sought to work on a full time basis in the UK as that
would probably mean I would need to commit far more than I am willing to. I
doubt that in general Aussies hate Poms.....we are from you, well a lot of
us are, I guess, we love to beat you at sport but I like to think its a
friendly rivalry really as if we hated you then so many of you wouldn't find
such a welcome here as you do but we support you fully in the protection of
your sovereignty. As for your climate well yes it stinks to be blunt (sorry
but you asked) and the beaches are very ordinary (these things seem to be a
high priority to us).....as far as why so many Brits want to live here and
so many Aussie in relative terms don't want to live permanently in the UK
well I guess the lifestyle here is great for a family, your children
actually are encouraged at all levels to participate in outdoor activities
(and the funding is there for it too), coming from parts of Britain where
the house prices by our standards can be expensive many Brits can come here
and buy a very nice home outright without or with a minimum mortgage, but
the lifestyle and weather depending on where you choose to live is far more
relaxed and that has a certain appeal to many. As far as Aussies going
overseas permanently well I think the US Canada and UK are the main places
and it is generally business/work related. The main thing about migrating
here is as I have said numerous times is your attitude, the right attitude
and you are accepted immediately. These are my views of course only.

I think it's a combination of money and doing a bit of exploring. I haven't
actually gotten around to it yet, but I wouldn't mind doing so in the
future. For Australians you can save quite a bit of cash - well it mightn't
be much IN the UK, but it is great when you bring it back.

I really haven't met anyone who hates poms... I've always thought that we
made jokes about each other in a very friendly way. I've copped plenty
about sheep etc. (although I must point out - that's NZ!!!), and I've given
back plenty of typical pom jibes. I guess it depends on the level of
familiarity really, with the people involved.

I'm not sure, but unlike Aussies' views of poms (in my experience), I do
know of quite a few Aussies with slightly negative views about Americans,
rather than their country.

Sounds like this idea could have value , only problem is that even Australians should not be forced to live in Australia , there could be big problems with Human Rights people .
Try this round them up, build camps in far North of Scotland (sorry to any jocks out there) keep them there until they demand to go home or top themselfs, works in Australia.

I worked with 8 Australians in London and 6 of them had decided to make the UK their permanent home.
Of the 6 one was from Brisbane, 1 from Perth and the other 4 from Sydney. When I told them I was off to Sydney for a couple of years they all predicted I would'nt stay longer than 2 years, and it looks like they were right (despite my head in the clouds protests).
When I asked them why they prefer the UK to their home country the reasons included proximity to Europe/travel opportunities, job/career opportunities, British pubs and, well to be honest the word 'boring' is how they describe life in Australia - they love the buzz of British living.
Horses for courses but I just wanted you to know - just because you do not personally know an Aussie who wants to settle in the UK, it does not mean they dont exist. Using the logic of many on this forum I therefore have conclusive proof that 75% of Australians who visit the UK do not want to return to Australia!!

I find you a well educated and thoughtful individual not your average guy for this forum.
The baying hounds on this site will get on your case after this post , a little anti-Australia in a nice way , to even think that an Aussie would prefer the UK is a hanging offence.
If this does not stir up the dreamers nothing will , must do some work now them in charge are hasseling me.
Best Wishes

That sounds about right - well they're all the reasons most Aussies I know
(including myself) have travelled overseas to live and work. I always here
"money" as another reason too. By the way, how long have they been in the
UK and do they have PR? I certainly wouldn't mind working in the UK for a
while, but I highly doubt that I'd ever buy up and settle in... after you
get over the buzz and have spent a fortune on travelling and decide to stay
put, I think I'd much rather Australia for the long term (but when I come
back here, I always want to try going some place else!).

You are probably right. But in my defence - he's right about the well educated bit! Some might say 'over' educated but that's another story...
