Hi all

I'm off on a recce to Perth mid November, and then returning before we all go out in Jan.

I believe I get 3 months to do my written test after arrival. Therefore do I have to do my test within 3 months of my trip in November or my permanent arrival in Jan?

Once you make the permanent move in January, not while you're on holiday.

Depends what kind of visa you are on. If it is a permanent resident one then yes you have 3 months, then I believe you have to sit the whole test, but I am willing to be told I am wrong.

Not sure about WA, but in Vic they invalidate your UK license, which has promted me to cancel my test which is set for Saturday. I am not a permanent resident yet, still have 1.11 years to wait for that.

Hi Finch
You should probably ask the WA Transport Department. If they only see
you as being on holiday, not only will the 3 month period not start in
November, but you might not be eligible for a licence at all, as you
would need to be a 'WA resident'

I'd call into them when you're in Perth, and try to get a licence
straight away. If they won't give you one, get some confirmation
(preferably in writing) from them that the 3 month period starts when
you arrive proper in January.

Did you have an Australian driving licence when you lived there
previously? If you or they have records of this, you might not even
have to take the written test - you need to ask them.

On a separate note, I recall you saying your son was born in Perth
when you were resident there. Did he get a visa stamped in his
British passport (if so, it's invalid and he should really have either
an Australian passport or Australian Declaratory Visa in his British
passport).

quick one about this invalidation thingey in Vic. I have taken, passed and bought my Vic Drivers License (10 years worth as well).

At no stage did anyone at the VicRoads office in Melbourne ask to see my UK license, or even attempt to invalidate it. as the UK license is property of the UK, would have thought it illegal for them to do so in the first place (though not sure about that) ? neither did they ask to see any proof of residency.

3mths to take the written test basically means that if you are living in Oz, and you get stopped by the police and asked to show your license and you cant show them an Australian one, you can be in a little bother (if resident on PR for more than three months).

I hope you realise that in Victoria (as with WA, QLD,and NSW) UK
licence holders don't need to sit a practical test.

Other people have posted here that Vic does nothing to your UK
licence.

NSW invalidates it for use in Australia, but it remains ok to use
overseas.

If you sit the practical test and fail it, then you will almost
certainly lose the exemption, so that sounds like a wise move.

But you can still get a Vic licence if you wish, afaik.

Depends which direction you're going in. Vehicles going in opposite
directions drive on opposite sides of the road.

Only joking, you drive on the left in Oz.

I got a NSW licence in May.
I had a QLD licence in the past but had to surrender it to DVLC for a UK
licence when I moved to England in 1999 (no additional test required when
doing this by the way).
As I had a previous licence in OZ, I got the NSW one without a test of any
sort but my UK licence was endorsed to prevent it being used in Oz. hey did
this by cutting a large "V" out of the top of the UK licence (the plastic
photocard part).
My Fiancé was also considering applying for a licence at the same time but
was told that if he failed the theory test, his UK licence would immediately
become unusable in Oz. As we were only on our validation trip and were
returning for a time to the UK, he decided to leave it until our permanent
move.

My take on it was that as I'm only visiting in Nov (although have my PR) then the 3 months won't take effect until I become resident in January. Jeremy I did have my WA license, lost it since I got back, so your suggestion about going in while there in Nov is a good one, I'll certainly do that and see what they say.

I'll pick up my son's visa situation with you separately if I may.

What I meant by whole test is after 3 months, I know I onyl have to do my theory. I called them again to confirm that they will invalidate my UK license and they say yes by either cutting a corner or putting a hole through it, and it is in the international laws to do so (but they are supposed to shred it but dont for identification purposes for me)

I am a little perplexed now... or confused.. or maybe both lol

Will go there on Saturday regardless then and see what they say.

I was advised I had to prove my Aussie permanent address by taking along a bank statement in my name and Aussie address and my license to prove I have one.

They may or may not still have a record if it was over 10 years ago
when you left. They should have, but that's a different story.

i am looking at my Vic License right now...next to my UK license. UK expires 2009, Vic expires 2011, and the UK one isnt touched.

i would honestly take what they say with a pinch of salt, rock up to the VIcRoads office on Lygon St, and get one. Half the time these people dont know what they are talking about - especially low paid beaurocrats and their knowledge of international law !

if you are that worried about invalidating the UK license, get a certified copy done and take that along....?

Whatever you do, don't let them shred your UK licence! Ask to see a
manager if you must do so.

Even if they do 'invalidate' it that only has an effect in Australia.
It has no effect on the validity of your licence in the UK or anywhere
else.
