I did. This is their reply (as you probably already expected):

Dear Mr Daan,
Thank you for your feedback received on 18 September 2008 which has been
referred to me for follow up and reply.
Your Class VE subclass 175 visa application was received at this office 20
December 2007. Currently the processing areas are allocating Class VE
subclass 175 visa applications that were received at this office on 12
November 2007. My estimation of your allocation date would be in the next
few weeks depending on the number of applications lodged on these
particular days.
The department allocates applications in the order that they were received.
The varying case load of nine subclasses being simultaneously processed
requires a transparent and fair approach to the allocation and balancing of
the workload. I understand the need to have your application assessed and
decided as quickly as possible, and assure you that we are constantly
working to improve our processes
To monitor where we are up to with our application timeframes please send a
blank email to [email protected] for the information by auto
response. This information is updated weekly.
We apologise for any concern our delays may be causing you but assure you
that we value the knowledge, expertise and economic benefits skilled
migrants bring to Australia and we are processing all visa applications as
quickly as possible.
Kind Regards,

Dear Mr Ross,
Thank you for your email which has been referred to me for follow-up and reply. Your application was allocated to a case officer last week however there is often a 2-3 week delay between allocation to a case officer and assessment. Once a case officer has assessed your application they will contact you if they require any further information.

Re: November, December, January & February Applicants still waiting
I think you should write again and send the stats from BEUPDATE. In fact maybe one of us should take those stats, put them into a chart of some description and send it off to DIAC to let them know that they are being monitored. Or the Sydney Morning Herald. I have no legal knowledge whatsoever but I am fairly sure there has to be some sort of 'trading standards' equivalent for DIAC which means they can't get away with palming everyone off with this nonsense about processing all applications 'fairly' or in 'date order'.

Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for your e-mail in relation to your visa application under
Australia ’s General Skilled Migration program.
This information has been attached to your visa application for your case
officer’s attention. However, please note that your application has not
yet been allocated to a case officer
All applications are processed in the date order that they were received
at our office. As per information today on the Department's current
allocation dates for Skilled - (VE 175) Independent applications, we are
currently allocating applications dated 12/10/07 for Paper lodged. As
your application was lodged on 26/11/07 it will be some time yet until it
is allocated to a Case Officer.
Please note that the majority of our applicants have occupations which are
contained in the MODL and due to the large volume of applications received
last year (over 20,000 in August alone) we do have an unprecedented number
of applications overall currently being processed.
For information on current allocation dates of applications, please send
a blank email to: [email protected]
You will receive the information by auto reply. We update this
information weekly.
Once your application has been allocated to a case officer you will
receive further instructions if we require any additional documents to
process your application.
Please note that although you have lodged an application for a General
Skilled Migration visa you can also apply for, and be granted, any other
type of temporary visa. This will not affect your General Skilled
Migration visa application.
However, as you have applied for one of the ‘offshore’ General Skilled
Migration visas, then you must be outside Australia at the time a decision
is made on your visa application.
For any further enquiries about the application you have lodged please
refer to our website using the following link http://www.immi.gov.
au/contacts/visa-enquiries/professionals.htm
Yours sincerely,
XXXXXXX
