Default New Zealand citizenship changes

The New Zealand parliamentary committee investigating the new citizenship legislation has reported.
http://www.clerk.parliament.govt.nz/...ts/148BAR2.PDF

The main conclusions are:

- effective 1 January 2006, children born in NZ will require at least one parent who is an NZ citizen or PR to acquire NZ citizenship by birth. Special provisions will be made for stateless children.

- from 1 January 2005, the residence period for citizenship will go up to five years, concessions for spouses will be abolished, and time on temporary visas will no longer count.

- in a change to the transitional provisions, those who *applied* for PR before 1.1.2005 will be able to become citizens after 3 years (2 for spouses of NZ citizens) provided they apply before the end of 2009.

- NZ passports will be valid for only 5 years in future, not 10.

The NZ Government will have to prioritise it in Parliament to get it through by the time things close down for Christmas. Only when it's passed will the final shape of the legislation be know.

Hi Jeremy,
May I know what does *applied* in para 3 of main conclusions refer to?
Does it refer to the date when one submit the EOI or does it refer to date
when actual application for permanent residency (after been invited to apply
by NZIS) is submitted?
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Danny

I don't know for sure but would guess it refers to a formal application for PR, as opposed to an EOI. You'd need a NZ lawyer to be sure.
