Default new zealand citizen

my friend is a new zealand citizen and so her husband has got a spouse visa that lasts for 4 or 5 years i think. how does he get a permanent residency visa for australia

Either the New Zealand citizen, or the partner, must qualify for Australian permanent residence through the normal rules.

Usually this is through general skilled or employer nominated. Employer nominated will be easier than for most others as NZ citizens can move to Australia and start working immediately.

Your friend should start doing his own research at http://www.immi.gov.au

If neither she nor her husband have any prospect of getting Australian PR they should think about whether they would be better off making their long term future in New Zealand.

For example, if they have children born in Australia the children won't be citizens by birth unless they get PR before the children are born, or the children live in Australia for 10 years.
