Default New Temp 5 year Parent Visas (for July 2017) announced

New Temp Parent Visa announcement by Assistant Immigration Minister Alex Hawke 23rd Sept 2016.

The temporary sponsored parent visa will allow Australians to sponsor their parents to stay in Australia for up to five years (The visa is expected to take effect on July 1, 2017.)

The Assistant Minister announced a series of community consultations and called for public submissions to assist with the final design of the new temporary visa.

A discussion paper containing the design issues under consideration was released today. Discussion Paper Introducing a temporary visa for parents

Public submissions must be received by midnight, Monday 31 October 2016

"The Turnbull Government recognises that many Australian migrant communities face particular pressures through the separation of children from parents and grandchildren from grandparents," Mr Hawke said.

Mr Hawke acknowledged the current visa program as inefficient, sometimes resulting in wait times of 30 years. The current visa system for parents of either Australian citizens or permanent residents into two streams: the 'non-contributor' visa which takes 18-30 years to process and costs $7,000, and the 'contributor' visa which has about a two-year processing time at $50,000.

The announcement comes after the recent Productivity Commission report which discussed the costs of migrating parent's “A high cost for a relatively small group,” the report stated, given that their contribution to Australia was “typically poor”. The commission recommended an overhaul of the visa scheme, proposing among others that families of non-contributing parents paid for any income and health support during their residence.

Note this page from the Department of Immigration website detailing FAQs relating to the planned new visa.

Importantly for many:

Will the 'Balance of family' test apply to this visa?

No. Under this new arrangement, this test will no longer apply.

A summary of the proposed new temporary parent visa is here:

Not sure, is it multiple entry or not? If any parent, return back to his country after 2 years although he had approved 5 years VISA, can he come to Australia without medical or he has to undergo through new VISA application?

We have to deposit certain amount for safety? What is the amount and it should be refundable, right?

And if all good, we can apply after july next year

Thanks,
dalam

Hello dalam.

The new temporary parent visa is at the design stage => your questions are probably best asked once the legislation is made known next year.

In the meantime, see the FAQs here: https://www.border.gov.au/about/repo...or-parents/faq

Best regards.

Not yet.

I'm expecting details to be forthcoming in the middle to second half of next month (May). Assuming the Government decides to press the go button ...

Best regards.

'People will pay it': More details on Australia's $20,000 parent visa | SBS News

"People will pay it"

SBS News: More details of the temporary parent visa - announced yesterday and costing up to $20,000 - have emerged.

There had been concern among applicants and migration agents that the temporary visa would replace the two permanent migration options – the government currently offers a $5,935 visa with a 30-year wait period and another for over $47,000 with a three-year wait period.

But while those options will remain, they could potentially see significant price rises in next week’s Budget, a measure recommended by the Productivity Commission last year.

Best regards.

The last I heard it was still a possibility. As you have dug up such an old thread (over a year old) to comment about it, could you post a link to where it has been abandoned?
