New MODL (list of occupations in demand)

Hello,

Just thought I'd let you know that the MODL list has been updated and will kick in as of 17 May 2008:

Twelve occupations have been added to the MODL, including five Computing Professional specialisations, Electronics Engineer, Optometrist and Dental Technican, as well as the trade occupations of Binder and Finisher, Landscape Gardener and Tree Surgeon. Computing Professional – specialising in Sybase SQL Server has been removed from the MODL.

Cheerio :)

Well it seems unchanged to me.

Maybe on 17th May, they will update it. I passed mine though.

:)

Cheers!

Yes the list has been significantly increased. Good to see that Sybase SQL has been removed, a total misnomer. I assume that "Linus" will be corrected to "Linux" some time soon :-)

However this approach was necessary to help get the numbers up by 31,000 I assume.

Cheers,

You beat me to it, I was going to ask if "possession of a blanket" was essential for the visa

... or a love of Beethoven?

Have confirmed this morning that the official instrument for the new MODL list certainly mentions Linux in all its glory: http://www.comlaw.gov.au/ComLaw/legislation/legislativeinstrument1.nsf/0/8C0E69BCA1EA3668CA25744A0018002E/$file/080424103MODLIMMI08034.pdf

I have been assessed as ASCO 2125-13 which has been nominated in the MODL now. Should it be mentioned in the assessment letter that I am eligible for the MODL points?

Linus! I picked that one up too, classic. I could have been worse they could have put eunuch's (UNIX) on the list

You will (should) get the points automatically when your CO types in the ASCO code.

But....The fact that all the computing MODL's have the same ASCO code may cause the ACS and DIAC some headaches as the only way that CO's are able to give MODL points is if the ACS puts a form of words on the assessment letter. I can see applicants going back to the ACS to ask to be assessed against the new MODL catagories.

Myself and a colleague are directly affected by this recent MODL change. He is a Sybase DBA and has already received his positive RPL results back from the ACS (I'll be submitting my application shortly).

Looks like he will no longer qualify for the MODL points but since UNIX & Solaris are now included, I'll be able to pick up the points and won't be needing sponsorship after all.

For the first time, I'm glad I've been dragging my heels with getting that RPL application posted! Better get too it now before the MODL changes again!

Hi CDM,

Very impressive to be a Sybase DBA but clearly a disaster to miss out on applying at this late stage. Unfortunately the NSW criteria for state sponsorship for a 176 still mention Sybase SQL but require a minimum university degree. This might be negotiable with them, I don't know. See http://www.business.nsw.gov.au/migra...iteria_ICT.pdf .

Hi,

Just a small question of new MODL list.

Is the newly added computer professionals (Linux,Unix and Solaris) need the usual statement (12 month experience)from ACS ?

Because the star is not appearing there.

Thanks

Dear Migrant8,

Doesn't really matter, ASPC won't give you the points unless you have 12 months in the relevant technology in the past four years, but you'd have to think it's an editing error to omit the asterisk wouldn't you?

Cheers,

George Lombard
