New Born in NZ
Hi Folks
How does a new born NZ baby get registered for public health coverage ?
Are there any other registrations needed, as the baby was born to
American parents visiting NZ.
thank ya all,

Due to the abuse of the New Zealand system, and particularly after the
last well publisized case by an American couple, the Govt has made
changes regarding registering babies born in NZ to women who are not
permanent residents, and is in the process/may have already passed
much stiffer legislation to confront this abuse.
In other words, don't expect the NZ taxpayer to fund health care for
the parents of those who abuse the system.
If the new legislation has already been passed, the child most likely
won't even have NZ citizenship.
Frankly, not before time either.

It will not affect NZ born children before that date.

IIRC there were some changes made after the publicity that surrounded
an American couple who had just had their second child born in NZ
whilst being visitors.
I believe from that case, files are marked by NZIS [if not also the
passport] and a warning is also put on their computers should the
parent/s attempt to enter NZ again.

The changes do not come into effect until 2005 & 2006 however there
were some loopholes closed regarding immigration matters [that's why I
stated NZIS].
In the case I mentioned, Border Offices overseas were notified so you
can bet your sweet boots that whenever a case is occuring, NZIS is now
doing same.
A child is born and the parent's go in to register the birth - not a
problem at this time it appears.
However, what passport are the parent/s going to apply for to remove
the child from NZ?
An American passport would be fine however if in the future the
parent/s want to return to NZ for 'medical treatment for the child',
this then becomes a different ballgame. [I am sure with your
knowledge you will get my drift lol].
The NZ authorities are wide awake to what has been happening and since
the Kent/Meer case, they are paying very close attention.
Then there is the question of paying for the delivery of the child.
I don't see why my tax dollars should!
