Mixed Response to Australia's Ban Proposal Wed Mar 28 2001
The response to the Australian federal government's legislative plan to stop the
nation's Internet gaming enterprises from catering to Australian residents is mixed.
The Australian Casino Association welcomes the fact that if approved by the Senate,
the ban would not prevent local Internet gaming companies from setting up export
operations to cater to online bettors outside of Australia. Kerry Packer's Publishing
and Broadcasting Ltd., for one, has lobbied hard for the right to do so. However, the
nation's sports betting agencies are angry, claiming the government's proposal is
hypocritical. The NSW TAB and sports books have been earning millions through
domestic Internet betting and previously believed they would be unaffected by any ban
of the Internet gaming industry. Communications Minister Richard Alston admits his
plan will not completely stop Australians who want to gamble online, but will force
them to go to sites overseas. "If people are faced with the option of gambling on
some totally unregulated site, I don't think they will take the risk," he reasons.
The legislation containing the ban is likely to be introduced into Parliament before
the end of next week The Sydney Morning Herald has the complete story.
