Tighten up on skill assessment process, as that is where the issue seems to be, and number of people qualifying will drop. I had to prove 6 years of IT experience, plus a degree (which alraedy makes it grand total of 10 years) plus 3 years exact IT experience before ACS was even willing to asses my skills as Oz equivalent of IT degree. No free or easy ride there, can’t be done overnight or through 12 month course.

4. The General Skilled Migration (GSM) Points Test will be reviewed to evaluate the effectiveness of the current test.
The GSM Points Test Review will be undertaken in the first half of this year and a ‘discussion paper’ will be placed on the departments website (http://www.immi.gov.au/) by the 12th February 2010 which will then be open for public comment until the 12th March 2010.

I suppose if not getting MODL points means an applicant will not have 120, depending on whether their occupation is on CSL or not there'll be some gamble in either going for an existing state nomination or wait on the new SOL/points review and hoping their occupation will be on a ministerially approved state migration plan - that'll be the level 2 priority.

Im really hoping that this compensates for the MODL points.
Its crazy im a health professional under 35 and all of a sudden I lost my eligabilty.
Something has to be reviewed/reworked or there will be precious few gaining visa's!

Apologies if someone has already asked this. I've read through most of the thread.
As far as I understand the situation, on the 30th April the Dept of Immigration will publish a new list. SOL? This will take effet from 30th June 2010.
Does anyone know if occupations on this new list will be awarded extra points like the MODL?
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,
No, we don't know at all. No doubt there will a system/list which will be different to the now scrapped MODL and will contain all the info. We can only wait and see.
I do however believe that it's not all doom and gloom and we may be surprised that it won't be too different to what we had before, only a bit stricter.

I've just checked the job adds on seek.com.au
Mining, Oil, Gas: 4,496 positions available
Education and Training: 3,532 positions available
Healthcare and Medical: 9,236 positions available
Hospitality and Tourism: 5,582 positions avalable (cooks still needed)
ACCOUNTING (in different accounting fields): 9,179 positions available!!!!!!
The jobs are out there, too bad that the occupation has been misused in such a way that is going to make very hard for people that really like the career to migrate and have a good job in the field.

Don't let seek or careerone fool you into thinking there's a huge shortage of your profession.

OK, I checked again, this time I used the subcategory Accountant (which is refered to forensic accounting specialists, business analyzers, etc) and the result was 4,737 positions available.
The other sub-categories like bookeeping, data entry, clerks, etc (that are way simpler) were not included in the search.

Did you search by jobs posted within the past week? Soem of those 4737 jobs could be months old and posted multiple times in those months. Don't forget the bogus job adverts by agencies looking to boost numbers. (I used to work for a recruitment agent when I arrived, so know a little of what goes on.)

Re: Minister's announcement on GSM visas – 8 February 2010
Can I pop up here and give my opinion?
It is only my opinion, I am not a migration agent and have no inside knowledge. However I have been here quite a long time, seen these changes come and go, and have been involved in the migration of several people in various ways over the years.
Australia wants and needs migrants. It has been a key policy since the end of WW2 – over 60 years. It isn’t going to change dramatically. If it was, it would be Kevin Rudd making the announcement.
The key skills are selected by consultation and lobbying. Those same lobby groups and interested bodies will still lobby for accountants, IT workers, even cooks and hairdressers.
What probably will change will be the competency levels of some skills. Until the announcement you could do a two year part time onshore course run by a backstreet college and pick up your PR. A simple investigation showed that the greatest percentage of the ex students were not working in those areas, and even worse, didn’t have the work experience to get jobs in those areas. So Australia acquired new migrants but still did not fill the skills in demand vacancies.
Everyone here seems to be panicking a little bit. I really think that if you are qualified in a skill that was in demand under the old scheme, and you have good work experience, then you will stand a very good chance of getting to Australia. Remember we are still booming as an economy, and it is still hard to find workers.
What will change is the onshore students will get an 18 month bridging visa to help them get local work experience, and will then have to get job offers.
Trust me – this isn’t the first time these visa rules have changed, and it will not be the last. It is an ongoing process. Australia still wants and need skilled workers. There will possibly be some fine tuning of the skill areas, and some redefining of some skill areas. But in my opinion things will not change that much.
Don’t lose heart, don’t give up. Don’t sell the house and start packing, just wait and see what the fine print says, but don’t give up.
These are only my thoughts and opinions.
