Messed up - help!
I've been following this news group for over a year now and seen so
much useful information on it - I wonder if anyone on their way or
already in Australia can give me some advice.
We have just received an e-mail from our case officer saying our
visa's have been sent to London - yippee - but haven't yet received
the letter with the validation date. I assume it will be the end of
this year or early next. However, have found out I am pregnant (most
unexpected and unplanned) and due 25 November. As we are not quite
ready to pack the suitcases and go permanently right now, our dilema
is whether to have the baby here in Belgium or make a dash for
Australia and have the baby there on an extended holiday. (All
previous threads seem to indicate its a bad idea to have a baby
outside of Aus once visas have been granted).
We are in the very lucky position of my employer offering 5 months
maternity leave which combined with a month or so's annual leave could
give us time to get there, say mid-Oct, have the baby, check the place
out and decided whether to stay on immediately or come back for a bit
before making a final decision.
My worries are:
Is it possible to just pitch up and get into the system and have a
baby. DO you have to register with doctors, hospitals, midwifes etc
well in advance? Are there many expenses not covered by Medicare?
Would having a baby in Melbourne be a good experience. In Belgium the
medical care is superb and having my 2 other children here was a very
positive experience. I am now older - 39 - so the risks will be
greater.
Is it possible to find affordable furnished housing in Melbournes
inner city suburbs and are the hospitals there ok.
Could I get my other kids into a local school mid-term or do I have to
wait for the next intake period.
We have spent so long persuing this dream of having PR for Australia
that it would be such a shame to mess it up now. Any advice would be
really welcome.

Hi Vicky
You are in a bit of a predicament at the moment One other thing you will have to take into consideration is : Find out from your Doctor how far into your pregnancy is it advisable to fly I think all the other questions are fairly straight forward Gerard

You could make a short trip to Australia once you have your PR to validate your visa. Once your visa is validated, you can have your baby outside AU and apply for PR for the baby.
This way, your baby retains Belgian citizensip as well as Australian PR. The decision on which one to stick on to in the long run can be defered till later.
