Melbourne Weather!!
Hi all
Many apologies if this question has popped up numerous times before, but I was just wondering if someone could help me out with reguards to what the weather in Melbourne is actually like!
So far the opinion I have got is that it is pretty much the same as over here in the UK and I'm hoping its not quite that bad! I don't want to move there for the same weather conditions!
Melbourne seems to be the place best suited for us workwise but wanted to check out weather before I make any decisions!
Many Thanks
Niki

My opinion, after a year is that on average you can count on it being at least 5C warmer than southern UK, It's 31C today, but has been low 20s for last 2 weeks. It is quite variable, but I've not seen a frost, scraped ice etc.
Why do they have open air swimming pools, I wonder ?

Re: Melbourne Weather!!
The old "4 seasons in one day" chestnut again. If you're comparing to
the UK these four seasons will probably feel like spring, summer,
high-summer, and spring again.
The climate records show that Melbourne has significantly better
weather than anywhere in UK. The climate could be described as
Mediterranean. If you search on
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv...historical.htm
you'll find some long-term averages to compare. If someone says
"ooohh.... it was cold yesterday" it doesn't really give you an
accurate opinion, it's most definitely not much the same as UK. As a
matter of fact, the winter in Melbourne is significantly milder and
drier than anywhere in UK.
Many Aussies dislike Melbourne weather, as it can be variable, and
would feel cool coming from Queensland, but coming from UK you should
find it ok.
Personally, I think myths about Melbourne weather are a good thing, as
they keep many skilled but ill-informed migrants away and mean less
competition in the local labour market.

You can see climate data for Melbourne here:
http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averag...w_086071.shtml
The averages do conceal a lot of variability - eg, in November the
average is a high of 21.8 but within that average you can easily get
many days at 12C and many others at 32C ...
An average of 3-5C warmer than the south of the UK is about right (maybe
comparable to SW France or northern Spain), but it's arguably even more
variable.
Melbourne is colder than other Australian cities, especially in winter,
but has plus points other than its climate.

Being an American midwest native, the criticisms of Melbourne's
weather always amuse me. Last night it got down to -11 C here. This
is my wife's (a Melbourne native's) first winter here. She is
struggling to cope with the cold. I look forward to moving to
Melbourne where the temperature never dips below freezing. I hear it
was quite a shock to Victorians last year when a tornado tore through
Bendigo. Tornado threats here are much more commonplace. Melbourne
weather is tame (if not downright pleasant) compared to many other
populated areas of the world (although I do not envy the occaissional
Victorian bush fires).

Or the odd Colorado blizzard that shuts the town down for a week...
You guys are almost next door - globally speaking. When are you planning on
moving?

Hello from another American midwesterner ...probably in the same cold
front lol. Have had snow on and off all day here. We're considering
Victoria and I'm sure at first anyway it would be wonderful not to go
into the negative temps.
I feel for your wife though.. I wear wooly sweaters or fleece all the
time here and it helps a lot. What I hate are the nasty thunderstorm
warnings though we made it through a hurricane in another state a few
years back. I'd have a harder time of it near Darwin...humidity zaps
all my energy so I think it really depends on what you're used to
though I'd do it in a minute if I found a Darwin employer to sponsor
me.

The weather here has been a huge adjustment for her. The
thunderstorms scare her to death (apparently the thunder and lightning
here are much more ferocious than in Melbourne), she can't stand the
summer humidity, and the cold is pretty unbearable for her. And
tornado warnings... well I won't even go there. I have heard "what
hell have you brought me to?" more than once in the past few months
lol.
To answer a question in another post, our timetable for moving to
Melbourne is pretty fluid right now, but will hopefully be sometime in
the next few years.
