Angie,

Good luck with getting the visa, as you are a nurse your visa should
be fast tracked, our visa took about 7 months to come.

When we went to Melbourne we only got as far as Patterson Lakes which
is to the west of Cranbourne but the beaches along that coastline were
really lovely. Berwick has been recommended by our Australian nanny,
she is actually a teacher and has been staying with us for the summer,
she taught at Haileybury in Berwick and said it was a lovely place to
live with lots of families. We will be checking out that area when we
go in January 2003. Her brother lives around Dandenong it seems he
choose it because it was affordable for a young couple to buy a first
house, its a bit hilly around that area so we didn't really consider
it. We will also be looking at Narre Warren as it is a commutable
distance to the city for my husband.

Anyway when we get there and settle down I will continue to look at
the newsgroup and try and keep in contact with everyone.

Hi,

We have a brief look around West of Melbourne and hated what we saw,
although we only got as far Deer Park, we drove for miles through flat
wasteland with lots and lots of big factories. Then there seemed to
be a big blocks of houses on small plots all grouped together (housing
estate type layout) but then great expanses of nothing inbetween. I
hope Altona is a lot nicer that north west that we saw.

Try and have a look at www.realestate.com.au for different areas and
also have a look at the north eastern suburbs if you get a chance. We
hired a nanny while we were in Melbourne at $15 an hour so we could
just drive around for about four hours at a time. This was well worth
it as you can really go a long way in that time without children. We
found the nanny on www.tntmagazine.com.

Good luck we may well be in Melbourne at the same time (if our house
sale goes through).

Belinda,

We've been out here for 4 weeks now. We is me and my wife Clair, and the kids aged 4 & 1. We're living in a suburb called Glen Waverley, the last stop on the GW railway line, 35 mins from the CBD.

Cheers,
Paul.

Isn't Sydney the most popular destination for ~40% of migrants ?
If so, every location is going to be a minority.

For real minority destinations, try Darwin or Hobart :-)

Anyhoo, don't feel bad about your preferred location just
based on numbers. Most non-UK people would probably list
London as their preferred destination in the UK, but we all
know that it's a huge, expensive, poluted and overcrowded
place to live.

I plan to go near (not in) Adelaide. I don't give a monkeys
where 'most' people go, my priorities are unique to me. [/SIZE]
Hmmm...Sydney, mainly is OK but although I come from e-europe I must say that some things disappointed me. Crowded, too many immigrants (sounds strange isn't it?), expensive and the worst thing few jobs in my field. I came here because I have a good friend who made all arrangements for a smooth relocation. I must say that his help was invaluable and I advise anyone to contact someone who's already there even if he/she is the friend of a friend of a cousin,. However, is better togo where the opportunities are (for you profession) even if you might experience a painful relocation.
My wife was right, again, she had said that we should go to Melbourne (I found out now that there are 8 times more jobs in my profession!) and I didn't listen to her. We already consider seriously moving there, one of the reasons is that we are running low on funds and we have 2 kids to bring up. So, its going to be Melbourne or Adelaide soon. The worst thing is that we have to wait (and pay the rent) untill the tenancy agreemant ends.

Hi Cathy

Good on you.

Melbourne? Check this out:
www.theage.com.au/articles/2002/10/04/1033538761412.html

We lived in Melbourne till 1996. You'll love it.

Suburbs? Visit the Age newspaper's property website www.domain.com.au which will not only provide you with info on properties for rent but wait, there's still more...

You can find not just info on renting but if you navigate thru the site and say pick Doncaster in the East you will find once you select any one property details for viewing that if you scroll to the bottom you will see "find out more" with 'Full Suburb profile".

If you click on the profile you can get info such as age, family stats, religion, occupation and even country of origin for those born overseas!

BTW, UK born is No. 3 in Doncaster. So you are NOT alone!

You're lucky. When we 1st arrived in Melbourne the internet did not exist the way it does now.

There's heaps of info if you know where to look.

So enjoy yourself surfing before you hit the ground in Melbourne.

Good luck

Hi everyone,

Got the Visa, done the visit (Perth, Sydney and Melbourne)now
selling(not renting)the house!

We plan to go before Christmas if the house gets sold and travel
around from The Great Ocean Road through Melbourne, up to Sydney and
hopefully as far as Brisbane for a long holiday before settling down.

After our trip at Easter we really liked Melbourne the best, for a
number of reasons, but reading all the mail about where people are
going it feels we are really in a minority.

Anyone else out there like us?
Dad, Mum, Girl - 6 and Boy - 3

Fancy comparing notes on places to live, suburbs (we really liked
Templestowe, Park Orchards and Patterson Lakes) but are considering
Berwick. We still need to have a look around other places as our
visit was pretty quick. Schooling, clubs to join, what to take, what
not to take, which car to buy etc. etc.

Are there any expat type organisations in Melbourne to help British
migrants settle? We don't have any family, or friends - yet! in
Australia so will have to be pretty self suficient to start with.

Or if you looked at Melbourne and choose somewhere else to settle, it
still would be great to hear your views/reasons.

Hi

I am currently getting together information to apply for a spouse visa to love in melbourne. I am living with my fince who is originally from South East Melbourne (Chelsea Heights) right next door to Patterson Lakes. I spent 8 months there 2001 - 2002.

I would recommend Patterson Lakes it is very nice with great walks along the river down to Carrum beach which is amazing. There is an estate in Patterson Lakes called Harbour Town which is absolutly gorgeous and would love to live there myself (a far off dream). PL is a very affluent area with housing prices reflecting this also so I will probably settle in the Chelsea/Chelsea Heights area.

Well better go

I like the idea of 'love in melbourne' - I'm sure it's a typo but it made me all starry eyed..

All the best.

Hi Cathy,

Sorry - had computer troubles for a while!

We bought a house back in February but rented for 6 months before
that. And might I just say to everyone here who is going to at some
point buy a house in Australia - Real Estate Agents are the pits -
treat them as worst than car salesmen and don't believe a word they
say. If they can trick you into a sale, they will. How they sleep at
night is beyond me so be very VERY careful.

A new book has just come out actually called 'Don't Sign Anything' by
Neil Jenman. Recommended reading.

Life with a young child without family or friends (although the list
of friends is rapidly increasing), has been very tough. It's very
hard to get a break and it takes a while to become comfortable with
people enough to let them babysit. Our little one was born in NZ so
we've gone it alone from day one and don't know any different - but
others have told me that it's been quite a strain having had their
children in England and then moved over here alone. That said, it's
not impossible :-)

We live in Mount Waverley in the S.E. suburbs.

Trouble is... the trendies caught on to Williamstown and have priced
the houses there out of the reach of us mere mortals...

Hello Cathy
Hope you get the house sold pronto. Just remember when you're driving
on your long holiday that the distances here in Oz are much greater
than you would be accustomed to. As well, it can be very hot at
Christmas so you should get a vehicle with airconditioning. I find
that driving with aircon on makes me less likely to become fatigued.
Wearing sunglasses will also help. We had our first really hot day
last Thursday with the temperature hitting 30c. I expect it to reach
the high 30's - low 40's by Christmas. My sister in New South Wales
tells me of temperatures in the high 30's already
    >After our trip at Easter we really liked Melbourne the best, for a

I agree with you. We like Melbourne too. Though I am Australian, my
wife is Thai. I met her when I was working in South East Asia back in
the late 70's. I moved to Melbourne specifically for the opportunities
and lifestyle it offered. We have lived in Melbourne for 22 years
and we love the place.

We live in Nunawading, a suburb which has been established for a long
time. Our house, for example, was built in 1953. We are just south of
Park Orchards and East Doncaster. We chose to live here for a number
of reasons; proximity to the city, affordability, established
infrastructure, lots of greenery, etc. We have good train services to
the city and a freeway about a kilometre from our house. This evening
we dined at a Thai restaurant in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy and it took
us only 15 minutes to get there via the freeway, a distance of 20
kilometres. At peak hours it can be a different story however.

Brits generally have no trouble settling in here. Some of our
neighbours are Brits and they seem to have no complaints.
I don't know of any British expat organisations here. My wife and I
joined the Thai-Australia Association when we first moved here and
that provided us with useful links. We have two Bhuddist temples in
our immediate area and they provide us with opportunities to catch up
with old friends. You don't really need to worry about a shortage of
friends as you will soon have more than you can handle...
