Default Maximising points for 885 visa. Have I got this right?

I am currently one year into my study with CIRCOS provider and intend to apply for 885.
I am a tad confused on the points issue because of conflicting (albeit unqualified advice from fellow students)

Occupation : 60 pts
occupation is refrigeration mechanic
Age : 15 pts
will be 40yrs by the end of course
Language
Am a Native British Passport holder is this 20pts or 15pts
Can I get extra points for an english test? is it an extra 5pts or 10pts

Specific work experience: 5 pts... I think !
My nominated occupation is worth 60 points but I have not worked in my nominated occupation for at least the past three out of four years so no 10 points there
However; My nominated occupation is worth 60 points and I have worked in skilled employment (in any occupation on the SOL) for at least three out of four years can i get 5 points for this? 18 months doing refrigeration here in Aus and 3 years in UK as a welfare worker, would my UK experience need an assessment by AIWCW

Occupation in demand / job offer 15 pts maybe 20 if i'm lucky.
Refrigeration is MODL but not likely to have a "qualifying" job offer for 20 points, but i still get 15 pts. If i,m luck enough to find qualifying employer can i get the 20 pts if i have already started my job.

Study in Aus 5 pts
I will have completed full-time study in Australia for a total of at least two years towards the award of a trade qualification 5 points

Australian Work Experience 5 points. I hope!
I will have been employed in Australia in an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL), while holding a visa that allows you to work for a period(s) "totalling" at least six months in the 48 months immediately before the day you lodge your application (5 points) can i claim these 5 points 572 visa restrictions have the the 20 hr rule but it says totalling at least 6 months.
So added up I could have anywhere between 115 and 135 points

Occupation 60
Age 15
Language 15 to 30?
specific exp 5?
Occ in demand 15 to 20
Study in Aus 5
Aus wk exp 5

UK passport gives 15 points. You can get an additional 10 points if you take the IELTS test and get score of 7 or above in all four modules.

Thanks for that mate, have been loooking at the ielts points and reckon youre right. so i should be able to get 25 for that if I pass test

another question is when should I sit the test??
obviosly before submitting, but can i do this a year before submitting to get it out of the way?

still need some reassurance on

Occ in demand 15 to 20. ie Job offer or existing job.. or if working for a qualifying employer a permanent contract to replace a casual one?

will my Aus work experience get me 5 pts
will specific work experience of 3 out 4 years on an SOL get me another 5 & will it need assesment?

Hi Sonny

60 points when you get TRA approval
15 points for English, 25 if you get minimum IELTS 7
15 points for Age
05 points for Australian study
No points for MODL unless you can convince DIAC that you have a minimum 12 months "skilled" experience as an AC&R tradesperson in the previous 4 years. Work must paid and be for a minimum of 20 hours per week (but not a minute more otherwise you will have broken the conditions of yoru student visa). Also they would only possibly count experienced as skilled if it was after completion of trade AQF cert III AND they were happy that you were no longer training but working at the level of a qualified tradesperson performing the full duties of that trade.
No points for Australian work experience if you don't have the skilled experience for MODL - is all or nothing for MODL and Oz work experience - is 10 points for Oz work experience not 5 as you have indicated.

No points for specific work experience as you would need 3 years in last four in a SINGLE skilled occupation for 5 or 10 points

so I make it 95 or 105 if you get the required IELTS. This is the reason most graduates will go for the 18 month 485 visa so as to obtain 12 months of relevant skilled trade experience which then scores 15 plus 10 extra.

Another little twist is that if you need to go onto the 485 graduate visa and you turn 45 before you lodge the 885 visa, you score zero for age but you can still apply - so some people will be gaining 25 and losing 15 - of course soem may only be gaining 10 and losing 15 and will never qualify.

Regards

Thanks very much Tony,
I was really quite sure that the MODL points would count, as to get TRA approval you must have 900hrs paid work experience. Why would Diac not recognise experience that TRA regognise?
and what about the Job Offer. If you have Job offer that might not be based on having 12 months experience it might be based on the basis that you are qualified and have the neccessary licence?

DIAC required 12 months of "Skilled" experience in the previous 24 months, paid and at elast 20 hours per week and post trade qualification and experience has to be at the qualified skill level. TRA require 900 hours of "relevant and directly related experience" so this can be training experience and it can be unpaid in certain circumstances. So the DIAC migration requirements differ in skill level of experience, the length of any experience (900 hours could be close as it would be 45 weeks) and it must be paid.
