Default Mandatory 2 years out of 5 (for citizenship)

Hi there,

I think it was in one of the older threads where someone said there could be a legislation change soon. And this change shall result in a 3 years mandatory stay out of 5, if we want to change from a PR visa to australian Citizenship. That's one whole year more than the current requirement of just 2 years!

I was wondering if anyone can validate this piece of information. Because I have planned on getting my PR visa around April - May next year, and moving over only later, perhaps in 2010 or 2009.

Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this. Thanks!

Its not law yet, still being discussed, but there is all probability that it will soon become 3 years instead of 2.

Do you think they'll impose it only for new PR visa applicants? As in, only if someone applies for the PR after a certain date. Anyone who receives their PR before that cut off date will be fine.

That sounds like a fairer way of doing it.

Since this proposal (as I understand it) affects applications for
citizenship, I would assume the change would probably be tied to
the date on which one applied for citizenship. That is, anyone
applying for citizenship on or after a given date would need to
have three years of permanent residence -- whereas anyone applying
before the magic date would only need two years of PR.

They might - or they might not. Wait and see.
