Default leaving Oz after resigning on a 457 visa?

I hope someone can help me. I have been in Australia on a 457 visa
sponsored directly by my employer for the past 6 months. Things aren't
really working out for me here and I've decided I want to head back to
the UK for a while due to certain personal issues. In my contract I
have to give 4 weeks notice to my employer that I wish to resign. At
the time I wish to resign I will have about 2 weeks holiday still owing
to me. My question is that once I hand in my resignation, how long do I
have before I have to leave the country. If I give my 4 weeks notice
in, can I use 2 weeks of that 4 weeks as my holiday leave, and after
the 4 weeks notice is up, am I supposed to leave the country
immediately or do I have 28 days etc before I have to leave after that
period? How does it work - will my employer be the one that needs to
tell immigration I am leaving? Any help with this situation would be
really appreciated. Thanks.

You'd have to check, but I was under the impression you had 6 weeks to leave the country. Have a look at www.immi.gov.au I'm sure it would tell you there.

When I came to the end of my 457 visa I just went to the local DIMIA office and picked up a holiday visa to cover a few months of travel. You can get this without having to leave Australia.

This won't work if the 457 visa has been cancelled - it's important to work out a strategy with the employer and approach DIMIA before this point.

The 28 day rule from ceasing employment is clear - but what's less clear is when exactly this starts ticking.

The original poster might want to consult with an agent competent in this area - perhaps contact IARC for a referral. http://www.iarc.asn.au
